Re: JK2013
My experience of hire emit cards is that the back of them is generally pretty bashed and I reckon I'm about 50:50 in managing to retain the backup card till the end of the race or not.
Orienteering - its no walk in the park

So now the organisers have the expense of hiring a video camera as well

Oh I had the opposite problem, keeping backing card in for 6 months, which meant that just about every hole had a pin prick so got a bollocking from Allan F when a control hadn't registered as I could "prove" I had been to every control on the course plus 10 on other courses and 20 that were in his garage at the time

hop fat boy, hop!

You'd need that for SI as well, in case one of the finish units failed. But surely enough people have such things these days that there would be no need to hire one anyway.

Every major event should have a backup timing system, regardless of what first system is being used. this wouldn't be a big thing for BOF to provide. I know the SOA have a camera (albeit thanks to the PWT2010 budget) to use.

This is what JK2013 will have. As andy says, every major event should have a backup timing system, regardless of what punching system they are using.

Re: JK2013
Right, we have had our say here and on the emit thread.
But is there any way we can "influence" which system is used for major events?
Who do we lobby, rather than just talk amongst ourselves?

Presumably you got reinstated by the backup card then?
No, because as you will have now gathered, they couldn't record a finish time for me. Fortunately, neither was a big event (indeed, one was only local), so didn't matter, if at all, but it has left me with no confidence in the system whatsoever.

I don't thin kI've ever been disqualified for not registering at an emit timed event - but then I ensure the emit card and forest unit meet and "click" together every time I punch.....

Hence the smiley. I'm not aware of anyone in the UK ever successfully reinstated with the correct time thanks to the "backup" card. I did get reinstated with the wrong time once...

Presumably that is because if you have been careful enough to get a backup punch there is no way that the EMIT card won't have registered at the control.

Can I point out that I don't care what punching system is used SI. Emit , pin punches or whatever -if the organiser of a otherwise attractive event chose to use trained gerbils to record arrival at controls I'd still be interested.
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg
