Re: BUCS this weekend....
Is there really not a full women's team from Oxford? If so, sad days.
Will? We've got proper fire now!

Re: BUCS this weekend....
Neil, BUCS don't really seem to care what level of BOF event their competitions are registered at.
Presumably BUCS athletics in the Olympic stadium also won't have any event jury incase sprinters go out of their lanes and are protested against, for example...

Unfortunately the 3rd member of the team had to drop out due to illness. With a full womens team and one the best mens teams in the competition, things are actually looking quite good for the next few years.

the worse thing is that to finish in the top 3 uni's overall all you need is 3 girls to finish both days.

It was ambiguous - rather than "full on" cheating.

If not reading the final details is cheating after all, otherwise it was fine.

Re: BUCS this weekend....
It's the same old debate as always I'm afraid... in summary:
- The final details stated walls were only to be crossed at marked crossing points.
- A long-ish leg started and finished the same side of the wall, potentially offering a route choice that crossed and re-crossed the wall.
- The red line between the controls did not cross the wall.
- There was no marking on the map indicating that the wall was not to be crossed.
- Competitor was seen crossing the wall by another competitor.
- A protest was submitted.
- The protest was upheld by organiser and jury, on the basis that it is the responsibility of the competitor to know what is written in the final details.
Cue debate...

and here is where the problem lies. Are we really expected to read final details? I certainly won't be reading the 100 odd page trilogy that's due to arrive for the JK this year, guess I should await my DSQ to go with it

But the athletes racing head to head against him were fine with the result. They accepted that it was not clear on the map if the wall was crossable and that he had not gained a significant amount of time from the route and therefore he deserved his victory.

Personally, I think he should have a 2 year ban, and a permanent one from the Olympics

It doesn't actually matter if he gained time or not - cheating isn't only cheating if you benefit from it.
Having said that, have we not learnt that a red overprint on uncrossable walls is a good idea? Especially on a place like Bigland where access may be troubled in future.
As for Oxford, glad to hear it was a blip. As for Dave's point, yes, troubling. Are we shooting ourselves in the foot by having two elite centres in that respect?

Ah but you have to remember that vital and funding providing BUCs points could be gained if a complaint was upheld. So who really cares about sportsmanship or athletes opinions.
