But is it embargoed? Is it just for the elite? Does it just apply to "orienteering"? As far as I am concerned it won't stop me from going for a run on the moor because there aren't any viable alternatives - and I'm happy to be non-competitve and/or helping by JK2006 anyway. It's a different matter for youngsters like Dickie, or the Aire juniors who live next door to it.
Dickie I will be in Wales all next week

That's rubbish! There was a big bold bit on all the entry forms and final details saying those wanting to run at WCup would not be able to if they ran at the badge event. Ed simply reaised that he's not running well at the moment and his 2005 chances were slim/non existent. Pippa however, chose not to run. The embargo there was well advertised and easy to understand.

OK, as I understand it as a Chaser but nothing to do with the organising committee, JK 2005, day 2 is a WRE.
The area being used is from the stepping stones south and east over Sherbrook itself in the forestry comission bit. The new bit is a conservation area that is closed to the public that joins the Sherbrook map.
Brocton Coppice, Ansons Bank etc (which are on the original Sherbrook map) are not "embargoed", and Chasers have events on these areas in the next few months. We have not had any evening training sessions on the area to be used by JK since March 2003. Where individuals within the club go on their own training runs/bike races & rides/ACE races etc is up to them and their conscience.
We have certainly been telling people who come and stay with us what is "embargoed" seeing as the stepping stones are only 10 minutes run away.

If JK 2006 Ilkley Moor is a WRE, I'll be surprised. Let's just say I would not consider it to constitute a world class orienteering area. Am I right in thinking that it is the short race (Day 1) venue?

yep, and the proposed classic race area is the white horse and hood hill, with bramham park as the relay.

Park Race should be pretty cool. But from being a Yorkshire girl myself, I have to ask what they're playing at. There were rumblings a while back saying that Attermire wasn't up to scratch for a National (I personally thought it was fab) so how on earth does Ilkley Moor qualify? And White Horse - that's a joke. Unless Yorkshire discovered some top new areas even I am inclined to say that maybe we should have done an East Midlands this time - we do have JK quality areas but most of them have been used pretty recently. Maybe next time YHOA....but what are you playing at this time?

Almost makes me homesick having left Ilkley many years ago.
did my first O event on Ilkley Moor 36 years ago. the map was black and white and the only features marked on the map were the control sites. Times change.
Mention of the Chevin also brings back memories. Scout running relays from the centre of Otley to the top of the Chevin. Seem to remeber it just gets steeper and steeper.

personally i believe that if planned properly then Ilkley Moor will actually be a pretty decent race, and will be 'up to scratch'. the lower slopes are riddled with contours, and because of all the ups and downs it isn't possible that following will be a concern.
if every region who didn't have top quality areas decided to do what the East Midlands did then the JK would end up being in only about 3-4 regions. I seem to recall last year's JK in South Central being a good event, won by the usual suspects, so just enjoy running in different parts of the country while you can.

Hmmm..I've been "enjoying" Ilkley Moor since I was a very small bairn. It's also very public and has had years and years of problems with vandalism. I'm still not convinced.

Embargoed areas
What are the rules regarding those areas which are embargoed for WCup 2005? I've been invited to go mountain biking in Leith Hill with some mates from down south. Would I risk disqualification, or is the situation the same as with domestic races, for example the JK, where one is allowed into an area so long as one is not taking part in "orienteering activities"?
Sorry about the delay in answering the original question, but here's the official answer. For the purposes of World Cup 2005, the word "embargo" means "shall not enter" any listed World Cup area (see http://www.wcup2005.org.uk/page.aspx?id=11354), for whatever purpose. This applies to anyone likely to be in any national team next year or any potential team official/advisor.
Thus it's OK for non-WCup runners/officials to enter next Sunday's Surrey Hill Races (http://www.sloweb.org.uk/events/20040606/EOD-flyer.htm) which pass through some WCup terrain, but definitely not for anyone likely to be competing internationally next May.
Hope this clears things up.

Interestingly, the webpage linked has no mention of the race passing through WCup terrain. I know people should be aware of the areas by now but there should still be a reminder/safety net just in case...
