How exciting - looking forward to it already - you're right about the hard work - I'm quite surprised that the S6D 2013 is being held in the same area as 2015 - you'd have thought they would have wanted to spread the load a bit.

it's not quite the same. looking at embargoes the only overlap is the sprint 'towns' which are mostly in the Moray area, whereas the long embargoes are in the Aviemore area. 2013 preparations are already well under way with, I'd assume, most of the central positions filled. I think we might find s6d 2013 gets increased entry because of it too? will be interesting to see anyway..

Re: Latest on WOC 2015 bid
excellent news, well done to all involved! I can't wait!
Time to make a hugely inappropriate, completely unobtainable long term target for a place at WOC 2015. Time to set up the Kiribati Orienteering federation?!
(at least obscene targets will [i]hopefully[/i ]lead to an improvement in my Orienteering ability!)

Kiribati will, if projections are correct, be completely underwater by then.
I'm for declaring UDI for Lindisfarne instead
Congratulations/commiserations to all concerned - have you got funds to buy cast off equipment from the Olympics?
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Can it happen without the friction between BOF and Scottish 6-Days as catalogued in "A few surplus maps"? I hope so as it all got a bit stressful at times in the run-up to '99.

That is fantastic news. Well done to all involved.
At least they seem to have kept all the feedback - thats got to be a good start.

Hopefully BO won't be involved any more... My impression is that they were only involved in the bid process because they had to be, now they can sit back and see how it's done

Re: Latest on WOC 2015 bid
I'm sure Dave Peel will be involved, which is surely no bad thing? But one hopes they'll listen this time when BigJon tells them its overplanned. And when the 6-day tell them that with a bit of flexibility WOC can have 5000 spectators, elsewise its a few dozen.
The embargoed area is quite small. Loch Vaa, Inshriach, Docharn & Deisher, Achlean, Rothiemurchus. Not much new, but its remarkable how much variety there is there, and in places the option to run WOC and 6-day from the same assembly in different areas.
Nice touch to see Scotia on the announcement sheet. There's plenty of credit to go round, but without him it would never have got started.
I assume the format of races isn't known yet.

... and if we could all wait more that three hours from the announcement before trying to engineer this fantastic piece of good news into another silly BOF-Scotland spat then that would be great

There was supposed to be a discussion at Presidents' Conference (which was this morning) - and I expect we'll get an update on that from the IOF in due course - but the actual decision won't be made until the General Assembly at WOC 2012. In any case it's unclear exactly how much impact it'll have on 2015 - in the latest Ozine, Åke Jacobson is quoted as saying:
With a decision at the General Assembly in 2012, the new programme can be implemented, formally, from 2016. I believe, however, that at least some changes can be made earlier, maybe already in 2014, and certainly from 2015 since both applicants for WOC 2015 have declared a readiness to implement it.

Absolutely, it's the bureaucracy I'm worried about.

I'm as happy as anyone to see WOC come to Scotland, I was actually pretty gutted to find out WOC had been in Scotland in '99 as it had largely passed me by because I wasn't as involved in orienteering as I am now. I would be absolutely devastated if it turned out to be a rubbish WOC because it was badly managed. I know the S6D/SOA can put on an amazing WOC because of the passion, skills and experience present in both organisations.

Excellent that the news has made the BBC:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-h ... s-14579744
Unfortunately they've insisted on using a rubbish picture which has little or nothing to do with orienteering (through no fault of anyone involved in the bid, I might add - I saw the press release which included a fine picture of Scotia in action )
Think this is something those involved will have to keep an eye on - if part of the advantage of WOC coming to Scotland is to "educate" the masses then accurate coverage of the sport is important.
Not to detract from the great news, well done everyone involved!

I sat in on the Presidents' Conference as an observer. The IOF presented their conclusions, which is that there should be fewer than 6 finals (which means 5 or 4). If it's 4, they suggested Sprint, Mixed Sprint Relay, Middle (prologue and chase), Long. If it's 5, they would add in Relay.
Comments were invited, and there were many, including some concerns with what is proposed. The means of qualification for Long was also discussed, but again there were differences of view among the audience.
Clearly there is plenty more discussion and consultation to be done. But yes, the GBR (and SWE) WOC 2015 bids both confirmed that they would adapt to a revised WOC programme, which would be possible if it is fixed at General Assembly (WOC) 2012.
The GBR bid was a result of excellent collaboration of all parties (including SOA, S6D and British Orienteering). I'm sure that good start can continue...
