I've heard that some people tested the fence/gate/barbed wire and found it as impenetrable as it appeared. A shame, as it was clearly the best route from the map. It is tempting to assume that none of mapper, planner or controller ever visited this section of the forest.

I suspect there may be something more to this than incompetent officials. Maybe it was intended that the gate should be open for the event, but permission was withdrawn late, and the map didn't get updated/overprinted to show the gate as impassable? Perhaps planner and controller got so familiar with the forest that they knew the route was impracticable with looking at the map, and didn't notice that the map showed it as passable? (- an easy oversight, I've made similar mistakes myself when planning).

As for me, I didn't read the map carefully enough to realise that the 'road' (over the viaduct) was level, avoiding the down and up, and so took the long but level track route through the forest. The right route choice as it turned out, but made for the wrong reason.

Thanks IanD, only wasted a few seconds, normally i'm the one testing the locked gate, 6th sense must have been switched on for a change.

I headed towards it, but one look and I decided it was not worth testing.
Would have come out of the previous control at a different angle had I known the bridge was not usable.

I looked at this too (in the rain/without glasses) as it seemed, initially, a good route choice on Blue 2. Just assumed for some reason when saw from above, that it would be out of bounds (health and safety, et al.), though not shown as such on the map - so took the path route round. Like King Penguin, would have taken a different route out of previous control if had known beforehand if 'oob' or about the barbed wire fencing.

On a different tack does anyone know if the results will be posted with BOF in time for tomorrows ranking reshuffle?
as I only have 3 sets of points 4 events (even if I haven't scored well) will go a fair way to disproving my signature!
(I appreciate that 4 events create an awful lot of admin)

I contacted one of the web people about results to BOF a few days ago. He told me the BOF site will not let him submit them due to some wierd way the events were set up on it (my speculation with no supporting information whatsoever - maybe something to do with dual club organisation ?).
He was alreay pursuing BOF to get it fixed so he could upload, but at that stage had got no reply from BOF central office.
I would argue that if they cannot be loaded because of a problem with the site accepting them there is good cause for them to be accepted eventually, even if outside the official 2-week window.
The issue is definitely not being ignored and is being pursued.

It would be disgraceful if three important (Level B?) events were to be excluded from ranking points for administrative issues. Definitely wouldn't be an advert for the sport or the process

On the fixtures list all three days are shown registered as HOC events, so HOC should be able to upload results for all days now. The Ludlow event is registered as WRE, but it's a Level D and not ranked anyway.

All up now and I've moved up a massive 762 places it appears - sliding downwards again soon as that is my full 6 counting runs and there are much better orienteers below me.
It is interesting that the relative points for the three runs don't reflect my personal perception of how well I thought I'd run but that is a different thread.


It is all the little behind the scenes things like submission to BOF that take the effort of the helpers -not often mentioned but I for one am very appreciative (not just because of the +762!!)

I find it helps your ranking points more if you beat better orienteers (ie they have a bad run) rather than simply how well you run - must be something to do with stretching out the curve? My recipe for good ranking points appears to be shortish but devilishly complex. If its too easy everyone has a good run and if its too long I run out of steam.....

I'm disappointed and surprised that none of my 3 SINS ranking runs get within 50 points of my top 6. Even more surprised that Nottingham is 40 off my top 6.

I was going to say that I felt the Middle Race was my best run and that was by its nature "shortish but devilly complex" but it was my lowest score. But I suspect that the better runners may have done what I considered and opted for a longer run reducing the "standard" of the competition perhaps.

Awesome performance from Steve Dempsey on Short Brown 2 on High Vinnals. 7.1k in 31 minutes is less than half the time of second place, and a pile of points that puts him ahead of me on the ranking list.

If only he had completed the course.
