Re: Springtime in Shropshire
I was just about to post the same thing (have also put a message on our club forum). Has anybody on here downloaded the details for tomorrow?

That is not what the BOF guidelines state, nor the risk assessment forms, as we discovered (belatedly) when planning today's races at Ripon.
A lot depends on one's interpretation of 'signficant' traffic and 'major' roads.

Re: Springtime in Shropshire
Anyone got any ideas as to why so many controls (and legs) had to be voided (Saturday, Sunday, and possibly again today). Controllers under too much pressure?

One control misplaced on both Sat and Sun.
All legs to and from removed on Sat.
All legs to removed on Sun.

All legs to removed on Sun.

Monday also a control under investigation. No results yet to confirm whether it is 3 consecutive days.

That should be "3 controls" ... and that just on Brown! 2 mapping errors, the third a very different interpretation by the planner and, presumably, the controllerto the mapper of what constitutes a thicket.
After an incorrect control description in the Urban Race, that makes it a full house!
But ... 4 testing, hard events in 3 days; excellent stamina and strength training for the future, just the competitive element affected. Thank you to all involved for all the effort.
At this level, it is the right decision to void legs rather than the whole course.

Re: Springtime in Shropshire
agree wholeheartedly with cbg's last two paragraphs.
We could only stay for day 1 and 2 and both days my courses had legs voided, but the terrain and course setting were the best and most enjoyable I've had for a long time, so the voiding was neither here nor there from this competitor's point of view ( though clearly a major headache for those who'd put in so much work and some competitors who felt very badly affected).
Very physical but totally absorbing.
Huge thanks to all who made it happen

Re: Springtime in Shropshire
One of the best urban events I've run (great map, great planning), but unfortunately once again with the perennial ambiguities about 'inside' and 'outside' which 'corner' critical to route choice. For one control (42) my careful and long-agonised interpretion was the reverse of the intended meaning, only being spared a long 'false trail' by a locked gate. Descriptions also need to match both 'map' and 'ground'
Maybe a prominent definitive article on the subject is needed in Focus.

Re. 42, the only corner that is in the centre of the circle was where the control was, confirmed by being described as 'south'. The other corners are slightly off centre and would have been north or west?

Gnitworp, don't think you must have been to many urban races Check out routegadget for gems such as Edinburgh, Cambridge, York, Stockport etc. Mind you, Ludlow did have something different - a control in olive green!
Can't see how the map could be used again for anything other than a low-key event as it was mainly olive green.

Re. 42, the only corner that is in the centre of the circle was where the control was, confirmed by being described as 'south'.
Except that the control description placed the control on the outside of the south corner, and the only point that could satisfy that description was in the courtyard that Gnitworp and a number of other competitors went to.
The control description wasn't ambiguous, it was simply wrong. Had it said inside the south west corner then it could only have been interpreted as where the control was.
Still a good event though, with plenty of route choices.

I left a note of exactly that description with the organiser. I'll say it again, we need a widely publicised exposition of how to correctly describe such locations in something that everyone reads. I'll nominate you to do it if you like SJC.
