Re: open
Just back from a very enjoyable morning teaching school children orienteering. Aside from the drought (good point, though), when newcomers query yellow/orange for open land I explain it like this:
orienteering started in the Swedish forests - think of the gaps (clearings to orienteers!) in the forest where the sun shines in ... the yellow/orange represents those gaps = the colour of the sun's rays.
The sun was shining today but the wicked 'sherrif' (in the form of parking wardens) gave me a parking penalty notice whilst I was teaching - hoping I am let off as I was 'working' for the City Council!!

Re: open
Yellow / orange for Open really foxed me when I started, having been used to OS maps for decades. On several occasions I found myself trying to relocate when I had white on the map but was in the middle of trees.
