i swear by science in sports PSP22, and im not s=just saying that becasue they sponsor the squad. either make it strong and have a bottle before a race, or make it weaker and drink it continually in the build up to a race.
reccommend you test it tho before a competition tho as it can be a bit funny on the tummy.
and as for after races.... mmmmmmmm rego.

Does anyone know any reputable research about this? It seems to me that you could be paying a lot of money for water, a bit of sugar and some salt - and I am not even sure whether you would be better off just drinking water.

Yes, My flatmate did her dissertation on energy drinks, she used:
lucozade,
redbull,
Maxim,
HIGH 5 (Isotonic),
gateraide,
that stuff you can get in sainsburys in funny shaped bottles that comes in blue and green colours and looks like it should join Redbull in the mixer market in most clubs,
and PSP22.
Findings were:
lucozade,
No real benifit as its too mainstream, more of a fasion brand than a addition to atheletic performance, a little like £150 nike trainers, that you cant run in.
redbull,
Keep well clear of it, when she was looking at it the FDA in the states hadn't approved a licence for it (and they willingly let through GM tomartos!)
Maxim,
not bad, did show some benifit in performance but not a dramatic increase, was better than leucozade.
HIGH 5 (Isotonic),
same as Maxim
gateraide,
same as the 2 above only a tiny (and i do mean tiny) bit better
that stuff you can get in sainsburys in funny shaped bottles that comes in blue and green colours and looks like it should join Redbull in the mixer market in most clubs,
Again dont touch it, she did wonder if the increase in performance came from the addatives that send you hyper and not from the actuall short chain carbs.
PSP22,
best of the bunch, but only by a little (i think it was 1.5% increase on the mean benifit).
She concluded that the majority of the benifit came from the fact that you psycologically feel more prepaired if your drinking a specific energy drink, so if you feel it gives you a boost then its the stuff for you.
personally Im with Rocky and Mharky, PSP22 will blow your socks off!
(they also have an online shop)

if its just one race, then I dont think you really need sports drink, good diet will give you what you need. But ig you have a tough schedule, like EOC and O-ringen for 2 weeks then it could really help you get all the vital vitamins, minerals, carbs, protiens, sugars etc etc that you need.

High Five is good too and nowhere near as sweet as PSP or whatever it's called.
As for whether it works better than water. I find on hot days it gives you continuity in blood sugar that plain water and eating doesn't.

So it's like a placebo effect?
Do you know what she used as controls?

another advantage of these drinks is that they actually make you want to drink more liquids (i do know why too but can't be arsed to explain) which is often a problem when dehydrated and dont feel thirsty.

In theory anything more isotonic than water should work. If you drink a load of water, it dilutes the ion content of your blood and your body just gets rids of it straight off. If you drink more isotonic stuff, the concentration remains more even and the body sense the extra volume. However to do this it needs actions of a steroid hormone which involves getting protein products from RNA - a timely operation. So you may be going to the loo all night afterwards, but you shouldn't get rid of it as quickly as you do water.
Or so my physiology tutore would have us believe.
