Having been to the JK , British and Harvester Relays, I have seen a high proportion of teams leaving early - before prize giving. I am interested to see what people think about it.
Personally, I think that unless you have a plane to catch or somethiing super urgent then you should stay to receive the prize. Prize Giving is not just about the winning team - photos of the team are used in compass sport and for marketing purposes. They are useful.
If the top athletes can't be arsed to get a prize, it comes across to me as
offensive to the organisers, prize giving is also seen as an oppotunity to thank the organisers.
Not only that, other people would give their right leg to be up there and receive a prize.
Is it okay to leave a relays early?

Depends when the prizegiving is.
A lot of them end up being a long time after you've finished. With electronic punching you can have the prizegiving as soon as the first 3 teams in a class have finished, rather then a few hours later.

You could have it after the first three have finished but the only people there will be the first three teams as all the other teams will be waiting to shout their last (second, first??) runner in.
On the other hand you leave it too late and they'll only be the top 3 teams there as everyone else will have gone home, and it sounds from what you're saying that even the top 3 have gone home sometimes.
It's a balance like most things in life so somewhere in the middle would be good. It's a bit of a poor show not turning up to get a pot even if you were expected to win it though (unless plane to catch blah blah) so nope gets my vote.

I'm with Braddie on this.
If I was organising and most of the teams pissed off - I would be too! Ok - some have extenuating circumstances e.g. planes to catch which won't wait - and if there are major delays in processing then it is to an extent self inflicted.

the problem is that it is usually well over an hour after the main teams have finished that they are given out.
they should have the prize giving much sooner to stop people leaving, also, i understand why they do the elite prizes last, but usually everyone else has got their prizes and gone anyway, and usually its the elite who are catchiong planes etc...
if there were less classes it would help too.

yeah I agree with you Braddie - if it is reasonably soon after the races end then it is showing a bit of respect to those who planned the event to stay for the prize-giving.
(I'd also like to point out that the when half of the winning Harvester mens team left it was not a unanimous decision)
