Brand new SI card issues.

ISTR seeing some discussion on this before. Used a brand new SI6 SI Card on Sunday and it was very slow punching (for an SI6) and also failed to register at one control despite me holding it in for a while when I didn't get a flash/beep.

I should point out that I'm not upset about this as it was in a prologue to seed a final, and I wasn't too bothered starting the final where I did (it meant I got to lead for a while ), just wondering if there is a known issue, or it's something anybody else has noticed? It was fine in the later final.

My SI-6 is always slow especially and clear, check and start, but improves when I get out on the course. It seems worse when it is cold, so I keep it in a glove when I remember.

SI6 takes longer to clear and download than SI5, but it is faster than SI5 at check, start, controls and finish.

There is nothing in an SI card that can be slowed by the cold.

If your SI6 is taking a long time to punch, that's because the SI unit hasn't previously been turned on.

Or the stay awake time is short enough for the unit to have switched back into
"stand-by" mode after the last competitor visited it.

Nope - a few people out in front of me within a handful of minutes. At the control which didn't register there was somebody immediately in front of me.

That doesn't sound right. If it happens again I would advise getting it checked out by SI UK

I would assume that the SI cards in common with other RFID solutions use EEPROM to store the data. The write speed will vary with temperature.
It may also be that the RF coupling between the control and the SI card is poor so insufficient energy is being provided by the control (the write takes too long and the SI Card runs out of energy before it can complete the write and confirmation transmission).
There are so many things that could be going wrong here that it is hard to pinpoint a single source. Is your SI Card much worse in performance than other SI6 cards? If so get it checked by SI.

Ah, what I thought I'd said (but clearly didn't) is that the next time it was used (and the two times since) it was fine, after a finish/download/start cycle. So I was wondering if it was just an issue with brand new dibbers.
