Just thought i'd let my opinions on this topic be known!
firstly the idea that juniors are flocking to SARUM is not completely true, for example we won 3 junior girls relay teams at the british relays and I was the only one of those nine who doesn't currently live in the sarum catchment area (to be honest I was on last leg and started about 10 minutes in the lead so it is likely they would have won without me!!)
There are loads of juniors who have started orienteering in the sarum area because of the hard work of the coaches...(last summer sarum did a come and try it event every wednesday for local primary schools and the sarum training weekends focus on the more experienced helping the new orienteers to get involved...whilst the sarum elite squad train together!!!) Jeff Butt (club captain and living ledgend) along with others put so much effort in for juniors, which really is the reason for the club's success.
My reasons for joining...I'd never ever (ever) run in a competitive relay team for my club before...which meant i wasn't used to relay running when it came to JHIs, JIRCs etc. I also didn't get a chance to run in the compass sport cup or the Yvette Baker trophy. apart from all of this SARUM is a really great club to be in and the members make people want to join!
(PS well done to FVO for winning the compass sport trophy...but we'll be back next year to give you a run for your money!!!)

I enjoy relays loads and can see the benefits as a junior. I know I would certainly do the same if it meant I got good training etc. Luckily Im in NOC which is good with juniors and so I dont have similar problems. It will be interesting if SARUM win Yvette Baker etc to see the reaction of clubs. Now I might and try to get the main LEI juniors to join NOC for the PP relays(John Rocke+Chris Williamson).

I meant the socialising at the event not the numbers loyally turning out for their club. True I've not been to a final and to be fair am unlikely to go as I'm a bit old!! I also think it's unlikely that HOC will go in Robs time as our juniors are all in the same age group, great for them socially but not ideal for YB, as they can only count on Green once they are 16.
At our round lasr year the juniors turned out but so did the parents, the JIRCs and PP's there are few parents and the atmosphere is very different, as they spent the evenings socialising. Even my reluctant Orienteer has done several PP's.

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

And Blandford is arguably WIM terrain anyway...

All obviously far too good, as non-gold 16s can run on orange and light green! But I see what you mean. It would be nice to have separate events for the YBT qualifiers, but the calendar is already fairly heavily burdened, and one of the aims was to build a competition on the back of the fixtures structure, promoting what's there, rather than adding to it. It also means it's easier getting teams out. That's why, even when the final went separate last year, there were still runs for adults driving.
But what is nice is going to a district event where the juniors outnumber the adults, and the latter are playing a supporting rather than predominant role. The last qualifier we went to, over half the entry were juniors.

I have no great problem with sarum having done what they have done, but i'm glad to see most of the boys - jo, matt, brendan etc have stayed put.
What concerns me is that this will happen somewhere else - making things worse.

So OD is attracting top competitors - eh??
Nick Morgan lives in Norway and needed a British Club - So we stepped up - You others should've been faster.
Everyone else either lives close by or has close connections to the club.
So there

Now, I know you're a feminist, and I think that's adorable, but this is grown-up time and I'm the man.

would this be the same nick morgan who ran for EBOR last year, and CLARO the year before? you'd better keep him happy, he doesn't seem to stick with clubs very long ;?
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

Where's Andy Simpson living these days then? I know Julian's in the Cov area but dunno about Andy - last I heard it was still M62 EPOC area.

Fair enough then. I should probably take it all back about OD building super-teams then.
What's so special about Cov - when I lived there it was a hole?
