Please yourself then Dave - I was only trying to get the matter defused and suggest some simple measures that wouldn't require much effort from the organisers. But I'm sure you know best.

Well believe it or not when I was at Uni a very esoteric guy with a very camp manner of speaking was surrounded in the early hours by some bike chain wielding youths.
He faced them and said "Really how can you be so childish, and in public too?"
It must have been his strength of character that had the effect because they slunk off.
Mind you he did go on to smuggle the Shah's sun out of Iran and then work for peace with the Taliban.

Ah but if I was a defenceless person menaced by a group of "neds" knowing that you would come running when I whistled.......maybe not. As Mrs H said mobile phone?
But I heard yesterday about a friend of my nephew who was mugged for his phone so again maybe not

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

I could see that a whistle or phone might be helpful if I saw someone else in trouble, or controls being taken and I wanted to avoid conflict.
Probably best if the organisers to get advice from the local police (they probably are), no doubt the local community support officers will know who the likely trouble makers are and the best way to handle them.
It's not the roughest part of Sheffield is it? And most troublemakers just look for amusement rather than serious trouble, so it's not something that would stop me going.

It's in one of the nicest parts of Sheffield! Ecclesall Woods and Limb Valley are not inherently dangerous areas. Son has run there regularly since well before he was a teenager (daytime and at night with headtorch) and NEVER had any problems. Mind you we used to let him run urban races and cross roads before he was a teenager so I suppose we're lucky he's still alive or hasn't been taken into care as a result of irresponsible parenting...
There's only likely to be a problem once potential troublemakers realise something organised is happening and decide it might be fun to try and trash it. But ShUOC have said that safety is on their agenda so it's not being ignored.
For those people who don't know Sheffield and are probably getting a very grim impression of Ecclesall Woods, please don't be put off!

No, Sheffield Hallam is better than them, according to the BBC.

Given all the locals seem to think it's fine, maybe just stop worrying? I know Nick Clegg managed to get elected there so it's not exactly the sanest part of the country but this assumption that the woods are full of chavs sitting around polishing their guns and sharpening their knives seems to be a tad harsh...

That's what I was thinking. Far too often on Nopesport, there is an attempt from some quarters to shoot down sensible questions. Some of you guys need to learn some empathy.
