And I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Wharncliffe is a great area - not typically Scottish at all. Bigland is a gem of an area and ideally suited to middle distance style.

I would point out that Wharncliffe is definitely NOT your next nearest. There is another middle race in the Lake District at Bleathwaite (about which I know nothing) and the Northern Champs is close to the Border in Northumberland.

What's wrong with 'Classic' instead of 'Long' (confuses with former Long O). It's the original form of orienteering with a long pedigree making it truly 'Classic', and still the most popular and prestigious race to win in all Age Classes. It's a form where a controller can still advise a planner to leave a control out, to make a leg more challenging, with impunity.

I think 'classic' is more what I meant rather than 'ordinary' and, yes, I have been confused between 'Long' and 'Long-O'.

I think it's a great shame that we haven't been able to come up with agreed names other than 'long', 'middle-distance', and 'short/sprint' for what are three very different styles of course. While it is perfectly true that 'long' courses are longer than 'middle-distance' which are in turn longer than 'short', anyone thinking that they are just different lengths completely misses the point.

The best succinct definitions which I have come across are in the Canadian Federation guidelines at http://www.orienteering.ca/pdfs/Course_Category_guidelines_2009amendment.pdf. The whole document is worth a read, but I am referring to just read three paragraphs, the 'Profiles' for each of the three race types.

In the UK our course length descriptions are just following the IOF descriptions.

1.5 Types of orienteering competition may be distinguished by:
• the time of the competition:
- day (in daylight)
- night (in the dark)
• the nature of the competition:
- individual (the individual performs independently)
- relay (two or more team members run consecutive individual races)
- team (two or more individuals collaborate)
• the way of determining the competition result:
- single-race competition (the result of one single race is the final result. The
competitors may compete in different races: the A-race, the B-race and so
on, with the placed competitors of the B-race placed after the placed
competitors of the A-race and so on)
- multi-race competition (the combined results of two or more races, held
during one day or several days, form the final result)
- qualification race competition (the competitors qualify for a final race
through one or more qualification races in which they may be allocated to
different heats. The competition’s result is that of the final only. There may
be A- and B-finals and so on, with the placed competitors of the B-final
placed after the placed competitors of the A-final and so on)
• the order in which controls are to be visited:
- in a specific order (the sequence is prescribed)
- in no specific order (the competitor is free to choose the order)
• the control set-up:
- traditional (the controls have codes and the competitor is disqualified for
mispunching)
- micr-o (the controls have no codes, there are extra nearby dummy controls,
and the competitor receives a penalty for mispunching – see the separate IOF
Micr-O rules on the IOF web site)
• the length (or format) of the race:
- Long distance
- Middle distance
- Sprint
- other distances

Nothing Canadian about these at all, they are simply direct copies from the IOF Competition Rules, as the document says. Definitions of Sprint, Middle, Long, etc in our own Rules and Guidelines (http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/page/rules) are based on exactly the same IOF specs.

Edinburgh City is your first chance to earn points in the new Masters Cup and entries close on Saturday.

The British Night Champs follows (and will probably be the easiest place to earn points as inevitably there will be less strength in depth than for day events). Entries for that close on the 30th.

Also the JK with 2 scores available sees an increase in fees after the 30th.

Finally the Scottish 6 days with 2 counting days sees an increase in fees after the 31st.

So you might be advised to get entering.

These contain two minor changes from those previously published.

Firstly, "In order to be competitive runners must run the designated course for their age class (Long if both Long and Short courses are offered). For events based on colour coded courses organisers will need to state the UKMC age class to course designation in the event pre-entry details."

Secondly, following "All competitors must be M/W35+ and current National or Local Members of British Orienteering to score in the UK Masters Cup"

we have added:

"(Competitors should note that this does not remove the requirement to be a National Member of British Orienteering in order to enter the British Championships - Long, Middle, Sprint and Night)"

An eagle-eyed reader spotted that we needed to include the second point or to remove the opportunity for Local Members to take part.

If I had a clue how to attach a spreadsheet I'd do so here.
