Now that seems to be resolved, but everything has gone into triplicate so if you were 100th in the rankings last week you have suddenly plumeted to 300th.

As soon as that problem is fixed (they're working on it) I will re-upload the Compass Sport Cup results, so the ranking points for that are added.

Rankings triplicate problem is fixed, so I've re-uploaded the CSC Final results, and now ranking points are being allocated.

OK, this is NOT a criticism of the rankings list and NOT a moan about personal points - I'm a fan, as it adds extra interest to the sport.

I ran Tinto Twin Brown on Sunday (entered Short Brown, picked up wrong map, didn't realise until control 2, didn't notice scale was 15 000 until control 9) and scored a deserved 1010 points. Pretty disastrous

However, I notice that a similar level of performance in Short Brown would have scored about 1000 points (pro-rata) - fair enough; but in Blue (again pro-rata) about 1070. Should I be acting my age and running shorter courses?

At this particular event, Blue and Green runners scored relatively more points than runners on other courses (about 80-100 more, at the 10-12 min/km point).

No. Shorter courses don't necessarily help you score more points. At this event Short Green and Short Blue scored you no more points than if you were running at the same mins/km on Brown, Short Brown or Black.

Comparing courses and mins/km is not always as clear as people seem to expect. At this particular event there was an unusually wide variety of course shapes which are bound to have an effect.

As has been said here many times the seed data causes anomolies which inflate some courses. I never expected them to merge anything like as quickly as they have considering that at the beginning of the year short courses were massively over-ranked. The tweaks that have been made clearly have had an effect.

Further merging will be helped by people that run a variety of courses - the more mingling the better it will be for consistency.

No. Shorter courses don't necessarily help you score more points. At this event Short Green and Short Blue scored you no more points than if you were running at the same mins/km on Brown, Short Brown or Black.

Ah but theres also the issue of whether you can run faster over a shorter distance. I know i can. I run blue and can "get the trip" much better than if I run brown where I struggle for the last few k (2x recently for CST races). Nevertheless there is a difference in points between blue and brown - at my end of the results (lower on brown, middle on blue) its definitely easier to gain higher points on blue in my experience, regardless of min/k.

Oh - and yes DQ technically would be the correct outcome - but on the other hand since you can technically enter any course I think theres scope for flexibility.

I generally wouldn't DSQ but there are circumstances where it might be appropriate:

- someone really wants to EOD on Short Brown; the Organiser says pre-entries mean there are no spare maps, so they enter Brown instead. They then still take a Short Brown map at the start and as a result a late starter doesn't get a map.

- in a 'more serious' competition, and the impact is that two similar ability runners start on Short Brown at the same time and give each other a significant advantage. (More tricky decision in respect of the runner who innocently benefited as a result!)

I've done this 2 ways:

1. Having run course 4 about 30 times in the year went to Scotland and picked up course 4 when I should have had course 10! Ran first 3 controls on 21L befor returning for M40S - mia culpa!

2. Organisers were recycling maps as more EOD than expected and wrong map hadbeen put in box - realised halfway to first control that there were far too many controlsand went back for the correct map.

Not sure about breaking rules spookster but unless the two courses are identical then as I say "technically" they should be DQ as they will have mispunched. I'm sure the controller would use his/her discretion but as snail mentions, unless this resulted in someone else not getting a run on their course (or there was evidence of a signficant advantage gained) I'd generally be inclined to let it go in the spirit of good natured competition. Its not like we're golf or anything....

Andypat, out of interest, have you got any actual evidence relating to your yesterday's post that "it's definitely easier to gain higher points on a shorter course, regardless of mins/k?"

As I understand it, if you run a course shorter than your normal Long course, your points aren't at all related to mins/k but to the fact that you're running against
people who are mostly going to have lower existing scores (from which the calculations
are based) than those on the Long because they're either older and/or of less ability.

I moved into M55 this year and started doing my age-recommended Long course, Blue. At the end of August, my 6 counting scores averaged 985.2 (yes, not brilliant but OK for me).

In September I ran my first age-recommended Short course of the year (Green) at an L2 and got 987 points. Normal sort of run and no real errors but a score of virtually
negligible difference to my average.

Because it is still relatively early days in the new Ranking system, this may just be a one-off, but it could help to prove once and for all that the original Short course
'deniers' were always wrong. You never did and hopefully still won't gain anything
running Short other than knowing that you sensibly entered a course that suits your
ability.
