BOF PROMOTED TRAVEL INSURANCE
There was a leaflet with the BOF logo on it that came with the latest issue of FOCUS promoting travel insurance. Be aware that it covers the 'activity of orienteering' and not the 'sport of orienteering'. So if you are expecting to be covered for the O Ringen or whatever with this policy.... you won't be ! (The company has just confirmed this by phone).
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

Re: BOF PROMOTED TRAVEL INSURANCE
Do people actually get themselves covered for orienteering when they go to the oringen? I'd presumed my E111 would cover me for any accidents I may have as it covers emergency treatment. Swedish folk in the UK would have orienteering accidents covered by an E111. It's not like skiing where you may need helicoptered off a mountain.

Re: BOF PROMOTED TRAVEL INSURANCE
E111 only covers the most basic treatment. So, for instance, it wouldn't get you home.

I intended to get basic European travel insurance, but just not specialised orienteering cover, and wondered if some folk went for the latter.

You don't need specialised orienteering cover... you just need cover from a policy that covers orienteering as a sport.... one quick look comes up on google:
http://www.sportscoverdirect.com/ventureguard/
If you have basic EU Travel Cover (like the HMCA cover) then you'll probably get away with an orienteering competition accident... but if the underwriters dig deeper it'll be a no - no

Re: BOF PROMOTED TRAVEL INSURANCE
Nationwide's travel insurance (actually provided by Liverpool Victoria) covers orienteering as standard - at least it did last year. Premium was in the £70 region for worldwide annual cover last year.

Re: BOF PROMOTED TRAVEL INSURANCE
Annual Travel Insurance is a bit of a minefield ~ you don't always get what it states on the tin when it comes to trying to claim for significant delays.
In my case my insurer ( Insure & Go) refused a claim when I was delayed by 48 hours last Summer due to an aircraft failure. The airline withdrew the aircraft from service until the fault was repaired. They are still contesting an Ombudsman ruling in my favour 12 months further on.
This year only 1 in 4 insurers are prepared to regard a volcanic ash cloud as being covered by the phrase " adverse weather condition". My 9 day delay claim is also being contested by my insurer.
So...if you need to get back quickly without incurring significant expense after a foreign trip, choose your insurance company carefully. You should probably avoid the cut price options.

Re: BOF PROMOTED TRAVEL INSURANCE
I have no insurance for EU, I put the premium in a savings account. 20 years on, I'm well ahead at the moment, and none of the stress of Clive's claims either. US is a different story.
