Update on Andrew Kitchen (courtesy of Rob Lee) after Mondays tree/eye experience......................................Anyone want to join a bulk order of sports glasses?
Andy had an operation on Tuesday in Cheltenham General Hospital to repair some damage to a tear duct and check there were no other problems. He had missed his eye although not by much. We got back to Edinburgh yesterday morning after stopping at his parents near Penrith on Tuesday night. He may even be back running within a week although what Kate will say about that we will have to see, and how soon he will want to go orienteering again I do not know.

i had a similar (but not as bad) incident on JK day 1. luckily it was a small branch and i only lost part of a contact lens. it certainly hampered my run though. needless to say i bought and wore sports glasses the next day!! they were pretty good actually, though they did fog up a wee bit.
rocky had a similar incident on JK day2 but without the contact lens to get in the way, nasty.

i did a similar (but again not as bad) thing in craig a barnes a couple of years back where i ran into a branch(and had to pull it out) and then couldn't judge distances very well so shortly fell down a crag that was twice the size i thought it was! Came out only a bit shaken up and with scratches on my eye (which were repairable, with help from A&E in stirling-i think!)

with this many eye injuries, why not start wearing some funky running glasses:

Always nasty eye injuries but am not sure sports glasses are gonna help much. My brother runs in glasses (for some unknown reason he won't try contacts) and recently had a twig hit his glasses upon which curled up like a spring and then pinged in his eye. Nice. Also nice apparently trying to find your way around a big hospital where everything looks the same when your eyesights all blurry!
Anyhow get well soon Kitch.

True they are different, and better at eye protecting but you can't say 100% you wont get a twig in the eye. They probably give you an impression of invunerability so you'll plough head first through things rather than use your natural protection instinct. So my personal opinion is I'd rather take the risk and avoid steaming up/problems in the rain.

Thats a subconcious reaction, we cant controll it, so if a stick is cominng for our eye our brain will try and escape the situation, the glasses are just there incase we dont move fast enough.
If its raining then there is nothing you can do. dont orienteer in the rain

Agreed it's a subconcious reaction. But deliberately smashing your way through a block of fight because you don't think your eyes can get hurt is a concious decision you might not otherwise take? Maybe we just agree to disagree?

We did quite a bit of research into sports glasses in the build upto WOC 2001 in Finland. We were looking for something that would suit all... protection from spikey trees, ventilation, comfort etc etc. There didn't seem to be a magic solution out there though. The more expensive one's always came out top of the list... maybe because the lense quality was good enough not to scratch.
