Re: Tips on dealing with non-orienteering husband
I'd encourage them to have a different weekend hobby rather than dragging them along. Bloke plays cricket and orienteering means I don't have to do the prefeminism tea thing. Otherwise he's happy to cycle or spend all day on the computer.

You need to get him to try it. Then once he's tried it, he can knock it. Perhaps get one of the kids to take him round a course to show him what it's about?
Why does he not go - surely it would help immensely to have a non-O hubby helping with pushing the kids in the right direction, finding the start, getting their kit on etc, being in the car afterwards to help with the post race feed/download/kit change and sharing any post race jubilations? He could help build the dens in the forest too.

Mrs H wrote:The non-orieneering spouse (not that i have one) was one of the reasons I first invented EVO (Extra Value Orienteering) to try and incorporate something else into the outing which would make it a day out for everyone. I suggested that organisers should make sure they mentioned close by attractions in their publicity material and if nothing else every club should invest in a copy of the Yellow Book to see if there are any nearby gardens open etc, maybe it should also be a Good Beer Guide
Thats actually a really good idea. I've a couple of young kids 5 and 2, so not only my non-orienteering spouse (who is trying to like it!) but two demanding kids to deal with. Theres only some many times you can do the string course - and these are sometimes too demanding for the 2 year old. Orienteering with something to do nearby is a definite plus. For my birthday we did the Scottish Score, followed by Deep Sea World on the way home!

Here is a novel way of dealing with the non orienteering of a spouse.
Last year Wing won the Norwegian Champs in ski orienteering. But this weekend Christian Hohl was ill so his wife stepped in and skied the 2nd leg for the Wing men's team at the Norwegian ski-o Champs. Marte only lost 30 secs to the fastest leg time and they won!

So Harry if I understand you correctly, what your suggesting is something like Mr NFKLeanne rings Mark Seddon and asks to partner him on Elite at the OMM then
hop fat boy, hop!

Now that would be good to see, the lazy man (did write another word - but decided to change it) often struggles to walk to the kitchen to put the kettle on. And I refuse, thank goodness for 4 appropriately aged slaves and 2 slaves in training!

No not really, I was just using a tenuously related thread to big up Wing and Marte Renaas in particular. Follow Marte & Lars Hol Moholdt in the World Cup ski orienteering starting tomorrow in Russia! http://www.o-worldcup.spb.ru/

Oh my gosh, he has decided to come to lakes 5 days or White rose with me and he says he'll look after the children while I'm competing. Better book annual leave and hope he can too!!!!

Re: Tips on dealing with non-orienteering husband
Or both! Apparently you can "travel across from the last Lakes 5 event to the White Rose in less time than it takes the White Rose coordinator to do a typical Blue course!"
That's our summer hols planned! Also it means I get to do a night event before November 2010 as I'm not going to the Pentlands and I'm getting withdrawal symptoms already!
Also a MTB event - have only done one of those so far!
So Lakes 5 then passports at the ready and over the border we go....

Both. Its a long way to either, so I will be doing both. If he can't get Annual Leave I shall have to see if I can get lifts from people. I still think he's going to be bored, and fed up of the two littles playing him up!!!
