serves you right for force feeding muzak to the competitors during the event, I reckon i would have had one or 2 or those tracks going round my head had I heard them several times during the event had i gone to it
Super idea though, presumably it was prohibited to go direct? I wonder how it was enforced, it occurred to me some years ago to organise an event in a maizemaze but I rejected it for that reason

This thread is now officially out of season.
Talking of which - why is the "harvester" relay held in June?
Surely theres nothing to harvest then?

Just curious - why were they called that? What did they 'harvest'?

Trophies, apparently (it was before my time). I believe that the club was set up as a non-geographic 'super-club' to win relays.

You malign them a little, I believe most of them were originally members of 2 Surrey School Clubs in the late 60s / early 70s. Some of them, I believe, still orienteer, and if any read / post on Nopesport they could confirm this.

Certainly do - Both Adrian Barnes (NATO) and Brian Bullen (FVO) remain very actively involved at the front end of their classes. I think Mike Bray (SN) was a member too. From what I can recall, most, including Adrian and Brian, came from Godalming Grammar School and, as Gnitworp says, rather than being an elite club they were competing as CH whilst still at school (although on occasions running up successfully in the Senior Men's class, e.g. JK69 where CH were 5th in the A Relay).
It looks as if CH was formed late '68/early '69.
Incidentally, the first Harvester took place in Eccleshall Woods in July 1978, won by SLOW, Aire second and BAOC 3rd. DVO were the first all-women team. There was only one race, with nearly 100 teams competing! Seven legs: 2x6.5, 8, 7, 2x4, 9.5, starting at midnight, winning team finishing at 7.30am.

Also Gary Strowbridge (GO) .
And the enthusiasm in that particular school was I think inspired by Martin Hyman who was teaching there at the time.

Martin is responsible for much more inspiration and advancement in UK orienteering than almost anyone else.............

Re: Maize Maze
Are any clubs holding a Maize Maze event this year?
I gather last years OD event in the National Forest was great.
Not keen on doing it in the dark, and assume it would have to be held when the maze was closed to the public, i.e at the end of season?
So any Maize Maze events?

WAOC may hold a low key mid-week one at the end of the season at the Milton Maze- keep an eye on their website for details.

Re: Maize Maze
Yup, we're in negotiation over the date at the moment - likely to be either 16th or 13rd October. It will be well advertised once it's finalised
I have had contact from a few clubs after last years event, I expect there will be a few up & down the country oer the next few months...
