So, my question is, assuming you are not entering an OOB area, if you cross an uncrossable fence or wall (double ticks or blobs) that is not overprinted in purple, should you be disqualified? If so, should the wall or fence not be described as "must not be crossed" rather than the more common "uncrossable".

I assume you are now talking about an ISOM map, in which case a double tick fence is a "High Fence" and a double blob wall is a "High Wall", according to IOF definitions. If you want to try crossing them good luck, but you won't be disqualified, unless the planner has made it quite clear to you that crossing such features is not allowed, e.g. by use of the thick purple "do not cross" line.

Different event, same weekend - I presume the field corner between 5 and 6 on Brown at the CSC Final was OK even though marked as cultivated land and the red line was bent round it, as it did not have the red overprint which the OOB fields did ?
I didn't run Brown, just curious having seen the map.

There was clear instruction at start that the oob overprint for those fields was deliberately short of the field edge because the edges were grassed over and LEI believed they had permission to use them.

A couple of runners were accosted by workers in a field who believed they were 'trespassing' but that turned out to be a communication issue as the field was 'sub-let' to a sub-let, and the owner had given permission but not talked onwards. Complicated lesson learned

I think a more interesting question in a sport that relies heavily on self-regulation is who here would ask to be disqualified if, after an event, they realised that they had entered an OOB area?

Given the instructions at the start, I ran round the edge of that field, but avoided cutting the corner, which was pretty much what they said we were allowed to do. Definitely seemed the best option once the track/ride heading North dried up, and I was confident it was OK based on the briefing - planned the leg on that basis.

Can't answer that - I'll check. I Think they should have been, and the map symbol implies that

ISOM 401 is for cultivated land. Used alone it is in-bounds. ISOM 415 is the black dot overlay for cultivated land 'seasonally oob'. I always take this to mean oob at the time of the event, though the wording 'seasonally' is vague and open to misinterpretation.

In many legends all the oob map symbols are clearly stated as oob including the 415.
This one does not, and it could therefore be misinterpreted as a local symbol for cultivated (ie contains a crop like wheat) land as opposed to the 'open' land at the top of the legend.

AR - yes it was the best option, but clearly mapped oob.The instruction at the start should have been more precise as to which part of the map it applied. The maps at -2 could have had it. Even better the red oob screen should have been applied as it was to the north, to either re-inforce oob or to clarify in-bound.

I did once. I thought a purple line forbade crossing a hedge, and jumped a wall at the end if the hedge (actually, a ha-ha, didn't even see the bl**dy thing till i hit the ground). In fact the purple line extended up the wall as well.
Controller wouldn't DQ me - many (unspecified) others did the same thing and he judged it unfair.

This is a problem with the purple "do not cross" overprint: you can't see which feature you're not meant to cross.

I think Scotia DQ'ed himself at the ESOC sprint-O this year.

I think lots of others on Brown (possibly all ?) will have done the same. Had it been on my course I would definitely have taken that route. As the fields farther north are clearly overprinted as OOB and this one is not I think the interpretation that it is OK is the obvious one and perfectly reasonable, esp. when it is the obvious and shortest route. The only think which made me wonder after the event is the fact that the red line between the controls is bent (slightly) round it, but I am sure I would not have noticed this on the run.

Ed - thats a really good example of the point I tried and failed to make earlier on this thread about this being something that planners should be able to foresee and plan away from. Looking at your map it does look a bit like entrapment!
