Fineshade.... It's Northants not Leicestershire.
The reason why the BMDOC was such good terrain is that it is in that part of LEI that is dominated by ancient rocks - some of the oldest in the country, and which had the good fortune not to be smothered out of existence by successive glaciations.
Most of Northants on the other hand is softer Jurassic rock, overlain with glacial wastes, mostly clays, and easily rounded into uninteresting features. It is only man's activity - iron ore mining - that has allowed certain areas to be of good orienteering quality (as in northern Fineshade). Wakerley, Irchester are both good areas for that reason as some will find out in forthcoming YBT round and Midland Middle Champs.
BMDOC lost money because the initial budget (on which entry prices were based) did not reflect the final requirements necessary for a level 1 event, and that anomaly was due to misunderstandings both in the quality of goods to be supplied and in the price discussions with BOF. The number of participants was in the estimated range, but at the lower end. Four pounds of every fee went towards transport and the event centre, both of which were provided at subsidised rates by the local authorities.

Re: CompassSport Cup Final
No doubt the accounts for CSCup Final will be equally transparent. Quite frankly the event at Finshade provided no more facilities than you will find at any of our Cumbrian District events, and all for £4-£5 per senior.
Finshade started life at £11.50 per senior and was then, with negotiation with BOF and a rescheduling as an L2, costed at £9.50. I am going to be very interested to see how 'they' can possibly justify that entry fee.
Accounts:
Entries.... 893 as per start list. Approx 623 seniors and 270 juniors. £7000 near enough.
Expenditure.....
£1200 Forestry Commission fees if L1. Now?
Levy on entry numbers £1442.50
Toilets, maybe £350
Maps, £360
First Aid cover, £250
Other expenses, £300
Surplus: £3100. So we can all look forward to a nice little rebate. I'll settle for £2.50 per senior and £1.00 per junior.

Please keep the money and spend it on development to help bring in and retain a new generation of orienteers - which improves competitions like the Compass Sport Cup by making them more competitive.

As opposed to undoing all the good work in clubs where development is already bringing in new members and improving team numbers and competitiveness, by making certain events so expensive that it puts them off going again!

Re: CompassSport Cup Final
The cost benefit judgement is a judgement for LEI. They've put in the hours of work organising the event, there entitled to make that call. Looking at their website they seem to be doing pretty well, junior coaching, lots of events, permanent courses ....
We should respect their judgement rather than irritating the organisers by asking for money back, especially when having happily consumed the product, and the product being a great competition that lots of people would loved to have competed in but couldn't, including members of the organising club themselves no doubt.

Re: CompassSport Cup Final
The organising club was putting on an event that, frankly, was of little benefit to themselves in developmental terms. Having been involved in a national level event where the club sustained a £1000+ loss (we saw the Peter Palmer Relays as worthwhile cross-subsidising, but would be reluctant to take it on again on that basis), I think it was very sensible of Lei to ensure that they didn't make a loss. The least they should be allowed to do is make a surplus which will almost certainly be ploughed back into club development in some way. If you can get away with £4-5 per adult for that sort of event, you are very lucky. I know we can't.
One of things we do to help development (although it didn't help us on the day this year!) is subsidise/pay for entries to races where people are representing the club. Then they are not put off by the cost of the entry. We find travel distances the perceived quality of the area, competing events (e.g. FRA races or, in my case, work
) etc. are, in fact, more of an issue than the entry fee.

LEI BMDOC accounts at
http://www.leioc.org.uk/members/bmdc_accounts.html.
Note the absence of an entry for Levy; this was a BOF profit/loss share event
I think that RJ your accounts are a little sparse and on the low side. Obviously at CSC LEI did not have transport and mementoes, but all the others were there in some form, but maybe not of the same magnitude. This draws the cost base down to circa £6000 +/- 10% for magnitude variations.
You may still see as unjustified a £400-1600 profit, but remember, being a BOF event that means profit share, not levy. This would give a net profit range for LEI of 2-8%, not exceptional.

Just 10 days after the event, Routegadget is up.
http://www.leioc.routegadget.co.uk/leioc/reitti.cgi
However, it seems to be the map only, no splits or courses, so you still can't add any routes.

Apologies for the lack of routegadget so far- even our summer evening events are usually on RG faster than this! Circumstances have conspired against me on this occasion, and I have had trouble getting the correct files together. I am expecting to have them later today.
