look at the results of these and previous races, ie JK, therin lies the selection...
i'm absolutley gutted for him too tho, thats the second time he's missed out and the second time he's been injured in the lead up to the fcc final.

I'm sure he will bounce back and have 2 fantastic JWOCs and a glittering senior career. Hannah didn't get to JWOC til bottom year 20 and she has come through to be a more sucessful senior than same age Rachael Elder (3 JWOCs) and a year younger me (4) ..so far I know it's a bit different in the girls but JWOC is after all a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind, the race is long, and in the end it's only with yourself (and the map).

can't someone just pull out to be nice?!
Why? They've all earned their places. It will be extremely disappointing for Chepls, but he does have two more years at this level.
Melons, you say it's a bit different for the women, but I remember Jon Duncan not being selected one year (and being told by various people that he should have gone whatever the result). He seems to have gone on to fairly good things!

Who's you Melons? Only one of the top young senior women we have at the moment! Fantastic 3rd leg for OK Ravinen at the Tio Mila ring any bells? Actually, maybe it wouldn't, women seem to be being referred to as the sex not to be bothered about in the majority of your posts.
Will? We've got proper fire now!

i have to echo samsonites sentiments. im not having a go at the selectors, based on the selection races i'd have selected the same team as them.
but oleg is a fantastic orienteer, one of the best i know, he always has been and you dont lose that talent overnight. i can't be bothered to cite all his achievements as il inevitably get one wrong or miss one, but the ones that stand out to me are
boc 2000 1st by 12 minutes
sorlandgalloppen 2000 four day wins,
jhis - unbeaten.
oringen 2002 played one won one.
oringen 2003 top 10 on elite.
however he himself admits that something has gone wrong, he hasnt felt right since spring cup, he's off to see the doc this week.
he'll be back.

selection races are there for a reason. if you screw them up then its tough jobby. if you nail them then it proves that you can race under pressure and are right for going to JWOC. I'm not saying that Oleg can't do this, but not picking people who have done well in the selection races would probably have been more unfair than picking Oleg as a 'wildcard'.
the selection races are announced at the start of the season. everyone knows what they have to do.
and i agree Oleg can and will bounce back from this.

chatted to my bro last night, and he reminded me that Mats Haldin never went to a JWOc, and he's doing ok now.
Selectors have a nightmare of a job and they always stuff up in someones eyes.
but Oleg is a super talent, one of the top juniors in the country, he should be there on merit alone, but thats not the way it goes with selection races, i know, i've been on the wrong end too many times!!

i agree aswell that he should have made it, and yeah selection races are there for a reason. but i think sometimes countries like ours, should worry about having the best team at JWOC on the day. we do not have the depth yet compared to the scandis and some eastern european countries, where the selection can come down to the very best guys at the selection races, becuase they are good enough that some will still get the result whoever they are. Oleg should have made it on the off chance that he has a blinder on the day, cos that is what will get the result. who gives a nope about coming 100th at jwoc, top results speak and they help for the funding aswell.
Go orienteering in Great Britain......... its financially better off than Australia:)

Have to fundamentally disagree with this for a number of reasons. JWOC is part of the learning process to become an elite orienteer, and part of that is learning to handle both selection races and the ups and downs of selection processes.
There have been any number of instances where juniors that have been totally brilliant must-gos have not quite made it at elite level, whilst others apparently not so brilliant have come through, so how do you know that Oleg is better than any of the others going long term? (I'm not saying he isn't, just that there is no guarantee that he is).
If someone who is so brilliant can't get in the top 6, then there is obviously something wrong, but the solution isn't to put them in a team and carry on, on the 'off-chance' they 'might' produce a good run. The solution is to find out why, and do something about it, which is apparently what Oleg is doing.
Selectors have regularly been lambasted for doing just what you are suggesting - wild-carding places - and most heavily so by other senior and junior elite athletes. Can't have it both ways!
BTW, none of this is any sort of comment on Oleg, who I don't know other than for being a far better orienteer than I have or will ever be able to aspire to.
