Pictorial control descriptions

My understanding of the origination of pictorial descriptions is that it was to avoid translation-based misunderstandings, e.g, the famous Swiss 'ramification of the oozes'. Given one world universally-understood language they may never have happened, in my view to no disadvantage, and NFKleanne would not need his/her 'list'.

The famous Swiss example you quote isn't famous enough for me to have come across. But I'm now intrigued as to what the correct translation is.

I have it on good authority from a clubmate who actually had to find it that it was a narrow marsh junction (on a very steep hillside).

The first question I got asked was wrong. It had a large depression symbol, but the options were pit or depression. there are two depression symbols. punters.

I did OK until it got to weird symbols like stick men. Was rubbish at the space invaders type game couldn't remember whatI was supposed to be hitting and avoiding and died in about 3 seconds. Fun though.

No, it was right. The IOF (english) control descriptions are "depression" and "small depression", so for the symbol given the options were valid.

If you were to argue that the IOF has this the wrong way round, ie that the written descriptions should more logically be "large depression" and "depression" I would agree 100%.

Hopefully that's the image loading problem fixed. I've added code to detect if an image hasn't loaded. Thank you for pointing out the problem.

Just a wee update about the Control descriptions quiz. We now have 92 people in the high score table which is fantastic. The image loading fix seems to have worked so shouldn't give any more problems.
