Well done to FVO on winning the relays, 1st out if twenty, but whats this...

1 209 INT INT SHORTS 1:41:38
Anthony Squire 77 34:18
Chris Godfree 33:29
David Eades 33:51
M35
1 3504 SYO GETN 2 OLD 2:17:49
Martin Ward 67 45:08
Mark Chapman 65 47:38
Charlie Adams 64 45:03
What hope do we have of proper relay races when such good people dont take part? Were the courses too tough? I see the open winners have an M45 and the runners up have an M45-next-year on their teams.

Well the Int b team were never going to beat the Int a team on paper, so why should they drag their exhausted selves around the open if they didn't want to (both Ant & Chris ran elite the day before). In opting for short they provided Int with a win.
There were quite a few open teams in mens & womens which were incomplete. If the teams were entered on mens & womens short instead, they might have found a few more people willing to make up the team.

More to the point why do the British relays have separate classes for 35's, 40's, 45's, 50's and a short? surely a 6km men's relay and 5km women's would provide a lot more competition and excitement for our premier relay competition. Just give out prizes to first vets team.
Good racing yesterday though, fast, trickyish, few hills and exciting ending to the men's premier. Well done to BOK, NGOC et al for a good weekend

The idea of fewer relay courses was discussed on the Peel messageboard (RIP) quite a while ago. You could maybe get it down to a handful of courses but have different categories within each one.
Say:
1. Mens open
2. Womens open & mens short
3. Veterans & juniors
4. Kids
Then that means you have lots of people starting at the same time and makes it more exciting.

Yeah - the Tio Mila (which is obviously a little different to our humble relays) has Men's Open, Women's Open, Vets and Kids. There's a range of courses within each relay so if you'd prefer to run men's short as a senior there's courses there for you - the best still win, regardless of this. The older juniors and fitter vets still run the main race - I reckon everybody wins!
Will? We've got proper fire now!

Don't blame Chappers and Charlie (who were actually a bit reluctant), as it was my idea to go pot-hunting. I thought it would be good, having won the Womens and Mens Open, to also win the M35. Well done FVO for spoiling that plan!
Anyway, next time we'll be back in the Open.
And yes, I agree we should have much fewer classes, with more teams competing in each class. Coming in the top 100 last week at Tio would have been more rewarding than yesterday's win in M35.
See you on the start line for the A Class at the Harvester...

The vets and super vets classes were pretty competive at the JK this yr 50+ teams on the mens I think. I know of some vets who were complaining that the short open was shorter than there course, maybe it would be better if all these realys were shortened.
Having fewer relay classes would give smaller clubs or those of us in clubs with very few people of their age a chance to run in a competitive team.

The womens relay classes are silly. Very few clubs have 3 opf W35/40/45/50. They should be in 10 year age groups at least. Its not much competiton to have so few teams. It was better running in the M/W55+ realy as there are more teams as there has to be both men and women in the team.
In Scandinavia they have Juniors, Under 18
Seniors
Vets
Super Vets
Men and Women, so only 8 classes. Perhaps add on a mini realy for the youngest kids.
Discuss please!!

I agree with CHS, relay courses are too long for the majority of people. NOC has one of the largest memberships of any club in Britain, yet we only fielded 11 teams with 4 of these being junior teams at the British. I got the impression that a lot of the seniors and vets didn't enjoy the long courses, especially with them being a similar length to their individual courses.

One of the problems with the relays is having them as the 3rd race of a weekend. After a 30min short race on Saturday followed by a 95min classic race on Sunday I was in no state to race for another 45min on Monday and ended up ambling round in 51min.
At Spring Cup, and other Nordic relays, it's not uncommon for some of the big names to miss an individual race the day before to stay fresh for the relay.
Perhaps the British Relays should be held on a seperate weekend from the British Individual Champs. A badge event could be held on the Saturday if people feel it's not worth travelling for just the relays (but if you're not tired out from the day before the relay courses could be a decent length and worth going to in their own right) although the relays should be the main focus.
I quite agree about simplifying the number of courses. Seems silly having classes with only 3 teams taking part.

i thought that the relays were being sorted, and it was agreed ages ago that there were far too many classes.
whats wrong with the scandy formula. of m/w open, kids (poss younger kids too) and then 2 senior classes, say 40-55 and then over. then you have less hassle at prize givings too!
