Feeling very bog-eyed this morning. The half of the family left at home started watching at 9pm to 'just' see the mass start; 6 hours later having seen that Jonathan had zoomed round leg 4 for OK Ravinen 2, the incredibly consistent scottish team was out on leg 6, Neil was half way round leg 4 for Nopesport and that Halden were still 4 minutes in the lead, we went to bed.

Following several teams there is always something to look for on the splits and the forest coverage was excellent of the leaders. The tracking was great, especially when the RR team went off up the wrong bit of yellow , it must be unnerving when you go wrong to know that everyone is watching you. We also particularly liked the shots of the less competitive runners all getting to the controls and stopping to work out where they were going next!

Just wish we had been able to stay and follow the leaders on the last leg, but that would not have been conducive to exam revision or exam marking!

I am still living off the high of watching the coverage of Venla/Jukola over the weekend. That massed start with all the head torches was the most amazing sporting spectacle I have seen. The coverage proved that orienteering can be a spectator sport viewed by a screen in the home miles away. And what a finish - after all that running only about 40 seconds in it! I have emailed the organiser to express thanks for some great entertainment and asked he put the start on Youtube. I want to see it again.

I'm sitting in a hotel in Tampere...

As usual, Jukola was an amazing experience. The highlight was the incredible last leg with the lead shifting for Eriksson to Georgiou to Hubmann, all down to navigational errors. We were all delighted that JD added a Jukola title to his collection -couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy.

Team Scotland ran with amazing consistency: the girls threw down the gauntlet and the boys rose to the challenge. Stirring stuff!

Team Nope had some problems with changeovers, but the navigation was generally sound. It really isn't anything to be terrified of, and the experience of an event with 14000 runners is something so out of the ordinary everyone should try it. Next year is right next to Helsinki.

We've been talking about getting a "SYO/SPOOK" team together for Jukola for ages. Looks like next year it is then...

As you'll see from the location map Jukola 2010 is about 30km north of Helsinki Airport on the E12 to Tampere.... that's means transport is easy... no hire cars needed Ryanair fly to Tampere, Viking & Silja sail to Helsingfors.... so easy to do.... and it's as close to midsummer party as you can get
