Winning JIRC relays with the WM squad when I was a first year 13 with JD(!) in the team, sutton park in the early 1990's, then winning it again as a top year 18 in yorkshire somewhere (think craney might have been in the team?), cranny was commentating and there was loads of banter flying between YHOA, NWOA, SOA and WMOA teams, with a roving microphone. Me and a NWOA M13 went out at the same time so it was really close, just 15 seconds in it. cool as.
then with the 1996 BOF tour at ungdomens 10-mila, we all turned up with our union jacks singing '3 lions on a shirt' or something daft, fishwick ran an amazing last leg and we finished in the top 10, there were some real names in that team - middleditch, johnson, nash, roberts, chesters, heppenstall, fishwick, baker (i think) then some girls who ran really well against the swedish lads to keep us in contention. nav it!

Watching a club junior relay team do well - especially when it contains one of my own children - such as JK and BOC 2000, BOC2002 - Has far eclipsed anything I have been personally involved in(not that that has amounted to much )

I can't remember the year, but I think my biggest moment of team pride would be when we won the JIRC relays in Yorkshire. Anna Jagan ran up as a W16, I was a first year W14 and then Jeanette Kendall on the last leg. We were vying with the SWJS all the way round, then Jeanette appears at the wrong end of the run in with Imalee just behind. Cus one of the most exciting sprints ever, which Jeanette just won by the skin of her teeth!
Otherwise, I know tis cheating but I guess Team GB are kind of our team, but when Yvette won the Scottish short race at WOC. Have never experienced a feeling like that before, being in that field and cheering. Bring on World Cup 2005 guys!

Oh what a boring subject! I want to know about the orienteering things you have done which you are most ashamed about! The time you shoved a grannie off a fence crossing, trod on an M10 to shin you up a wall, nicked a map off someone at a Tio Mila when you realised you were at the wrong control, etc, etc.

Sadly my only team achievement in orienteering has been winning a 3-legged alco. So that has to be it really. Although if the boundaries are stretched then there was immense team pride in leading the UNOC team home to victory in the BUSA beer race. I'd like to think it was my couple of seconds hard work that got us off to a good start.
Now, what was it that caused my chronic digestive problems that mean I can no longer drink beer ... ?

Im not sure proudest o moments - probably the two years that i was involved in the winning jirc relay teams, especially the first one becasue stephen porteuos went out in 8th place on last leg at ringwood,
turned out he passed everyone, nixon, McCarthy etc.
It was such an amzing feeling, we were the second team too.

i can however reveal that he overtook myself, rich robinson, tom fry, mccarthy, rich jackson plus a few others, all of whom were decent m18's. i remember it quite vividly cos i was the punter trying to catch him up on the run-in!
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

Yeah Drew! Those 2 JIRC's were pretty damn immense. I think the JIRC's are by far the best event in the British junior calender for the experience's I had at them. Both in the orienteering and the banter (Pyrat doing a streak round the school corridors when everyone was in their sleeping bags, and just escaping from the grasp of some old geezer!).
That was a classic what Porteous did that day though.
But Craney just to knock you back down a peg...The JHI relays that year, N. Ireland. Tom Fry, then a hot on form M18 JHI champion and British Squad member, Richard Robinson British Squad member also, had set off Matt Crane JWOC runner from that year in the lead in the M18 relay. Scotland had Mark Sanderson and that man Stephen Porteous on 1st and 2nd. Then I ran third leg, none of us in the squad, I caught and passed Craney before the spectator control, then nearly spewed at the spectator control when the adreniline pumped in as I found out I was in the lead. Carefully got round the rest of the course and was greeted by the team. One of the best.

Yeah yeah, well done McCarthy. Aren't Scottish people are good at remembering when they win? If you really want me to list every relay I've won in the past I can try but I'll stuggle to remember them all. Actually I don't want to bore people.

Granted I was brought down a peg or two that weekend. Not sure if I was less pleased with losing to Scotland in the relays or coming 8th in the individual. But I wouldn't really have described our team as being all that good.

Aye. Its better when its not expected.
Two SHI appearances, two relay anchor legs, twice back first, one passing a certain Bendover on the run-in at Pembrey. Very proud of my team that day as they'd managed to convince Ben of my awesome sprinting speed and he didn't contest the run in . Should have looked at some splits - I sprint like a pregnant hippopotamus

just to bring you down a peg graeme i'd just like to point out that in true bendover fashion i was the only person at that SHI's who got absolutely sh*tfaced the night before in the pub. so when it came to contesting a sprint finish i was more concerned with not simultaneuosly puking and browning my pants. now that would have been nice for the spectators. in retrospect though graeme, if you look at my finish splits you'll see that i am no carl lewis when it comes to sprint finishes either!
funnily enough that relay was a memorable experience for me but not really for orienteering reasons - there was one particular leg where all you guys had caught me up, and there was a long leg - i went through some open felled land and you guys stayed in the woods. Imagine my shock when i crested a rise over into a depression to find roger goddard having a dump.
