Technical wicking briefs are the business regardless of gender.
There is good advice on Runner's World forums on this subject.

Thanks mapping mum - I'll check it out.
This was a semi-serious subject for helpful running advice - but also, as its in banter, for general discussion!

I used to wear lycra running shorts, but have more recently taken to wearing duathlon shorts, since they are far more comfortable in the important areas.

Re: Boxers, briefs or a support?
My favourite are a pair (well 2 pairs actually) of 80% wood boxers.
When I saw these in ASDA I was understandably intrigued and just had to buy them. I am at a total loss as to how they have created this fine sartorial garment but they are brill. Robust - I cant wear them out comfy - as the day they were bought and dont smell - even after back to back events
Theyre so good I probably didnt need to buy the 2nd pair

Yep! the little info box on the shelf said 'wood'. It actually said that the revolutionary material (the name of which was on the little washing info tag on the waistband, which wasnt quite so robust and has ling since faded) consisted of 80% wood and some elastene, or some such stretchy stuff.
So far, thank god, they havent attracted attention from any wood loving creatures ... beetles, squirrels, flocks of starlings and the like

I thought you were making it up, but apparently not .
Edit: In fact, they do a whole range of wooden unmentionables, although it's not exactly cheap...
