Hey that's my idea (see discussion on rankings).
Surely to have a Previous Champions Cup you'd have had to have won something in the past (not neccessarily talking about you P&C) rather than just being a Vet? Bit like the Masters tennis tour that Johnny Mac always wins?
There's no specific competiton I know of anyway although I'm still M21

There is a masters cup - based on nationals/championships. I think it was Andrew Kelly's brainchild a couple of years ago, but it doesn't really seem to attract much attention.

Yup, although to be fair, so's the UK Cup... would be an interesting idea to make that like the world cup so that your score in the final race has to count towards your total score (as indeed in the FCC league). Would be good practice for racing under a bit more pressure (think of Dickie's £££ mistake at the JOK sprint in '99!) Something for ECSG to consider?

It would certainly make it an interesting competition whether it's Vets Juniors or Seniors. Forgive me for not knowing FCC rules so maybe this is old hat but I'd envisage something like top X at the end of the year get invited to the final and have a race or races (the common format seems to be Middle Saturday and Classic Sunday?) which counts for double points?

FCC rules are that top 15 20s and top 15 18s based on (best 4) qualifiers get to the final, which is a middle and a classic race. Combined time for the two final races gives FCC cup positions (i.e. fastest over the 2 days of the final is te FCC champion), plus the scores from each of the two final races (just the same points value as the series races) get added to the previous best 4 to give the series totals for FCC series champions.
I think that's about right, it's a few years since I was running it myself and these things change a little.

Why not take this "final" idea and have a senoir and a vets thang on the same weekend?
Maybe with more qualifiers, i don't know.

Sounds good to me. Seems a shame to put on two top class events for only 60 competitors. Just need to get fit enough to qualify now... Maybe we should have 100 qualifiers on each - may just get in then.

Hi Ed. Sort of. My idea was to do it with simple scoring based on places at National Events/BOC/JK, similar to FCC scoring, thus making Nat Events a bit more meaningful. I don't like it being based on ranking points, as I don't believe in that approach: to me it's all about what people do against each other head to head in a forest, and that a win is a win. I also prefer simplicity in things like this.
The idea was also to make a big production of it. At present it's simply a mathematical exercise, which I think is a bit of a waste of time.

It seems there hasn't been a swarm over 35+ people jumping up and down with excitement about this topic.
Does that mean that the idea would have/has little value to the 35+?

OK, this is just a personal opinion, not a swarm. I orienteered up to a high level in my 20s, got huge personal satisfaction from it. Dropped out because I couldn't keep it up to that standard and work medical on-call rotas. Got back to it 20 years later (it itched), but never going to be able to run that fast again. Now just get huge satisfaction from having a good clean run, training with local running club, coaching and (hopefully) club development. Know that I could test myself out further if I wanted by dropping down to 35L or running brown courses at CC, but have so many diverse challenges in life that find it hard to see why I would want to do this highly competitively again.
However, there are lots of people out there much more competitive than me, who maybe didn't find O in their twenties, may not read this forum, but would provide a hughly enjoyable and competitive PCC. And they are also some of orienteering's most valuable assets. (and it fits well with govt policies on promoting more exercise, and in "equity in sport" if over 35s are seen as "exciting" and "important" in a sport
Way to find out would be direct approach to the over 35s in top 25 (say) in recent major events, making it clear that there is real committent to the idea as part of the on-going development of the sport. Couple it with serious coaching activities for new-comers over 35 to get them rapidly up-to-speed and into the top ranks of competition.

I think you have to get a bit older before it matters - the best M35/M40 are running on the elite course. We take BOC pretty seriously.
I have on my sideboard a nice trophy for being the "M40 British Sprint Champion 2003". The reason I have it is that the fastest two M40s (Tett and Musgrave) were accepted for M21E, while the third fastest (me) got bounced off onto M40. So its hard to convince myself it means much.

Yes please - it will save me waiting to go through training with my 7 year old !
Maybe we just need a competition for people who can't run fast, regardless of age - never hit 7mins/km on a blue or brown course? - you're in

Now you're talking Possibly the lack of response from over 35s is that most of us havn't been past champions anyway - perhaps it needs to be split up into divisions like football teams - I am in the Acrington stanley division - and would enjoy the competition there - I don't want to put myself up to be humiliated by Stella and Jacky and the likes
