All these events being canceld because of the snow is anoying. I remember some of my most enjoyable runs have been at snowy events. I particularly remember runing around the roaches in soft snow where it tracked up big style so a late start was a real advantage though the deep snow covered heather. Then there was a British nights up Pendle way where the open hill was realy nice runable firm windblowen snow on a clear cold night. Of course the real clasic was the Lakes Kimm where I remember going over fairfield the oposit way to walkers with crampons and axes in a train of elite runners half of which were in shorts....
Looks like I will have to go and run the Titterstone Clee fell race to get a good snowy run in.

I share your disappointment with the cancellations.
But to answer your question, so far as I can make out it is problems with car parks and landowners which are causing the cancellations, rather than organisers feeling that orienteers can't cope with the white stuff.
I'm off to the SO event tomorrow, which so far as I know is still on.

The snow can of course cause problems as it does make it much harder to know where to put your feet - I would certainly be worried about twisted ankles or worse.
Anyway, the cancellation of the TVOC event means a rest weekend for me but I have just entered the SMOC regional at Silverstone next weekend. It was to have been a 'rest' weekend before the following weekend's HH National and then the BOC. Let's hope the weather eases up before these events.

On the contrary we went to an excellent DFOK night event at Mereworth on Wednesday. The roads en route were clear but there was still several inches of snow covering the forest floor. This snow effectively filled in all the ruts etc and running through the forest felt like running on a carpet.

Titerstone clee was very nice this morning. I think the snow helpes a nice soft surface and a decent track taking exactly the right line up the hill. Short enough not to get my feet to cold.

I agree with you Ifor, except that I suspect most are cancelled because there is nowhere to park cars - not much the organisers can do about that. I can also fully understand cancelling urban events when the pavements are sheets of ice - Edinburgh steps and ice are a rather frightening idea
Nice to see my race, deliberately started in winter, still goes on as before.

Great night event last night in the NWest. OK it hasn't snowed for 4 or 5 days but we were running on snow/ice paths and snow covered moors. Nearly a full moon too. V nice!
Car park was UU and just about a sheet of ice to drive to and park on but we all manged!

The cyceling club was not much better today instead of the scheduled ride over to the forest of dean still all mostly on A or B roads we went up the A38 to Gloucester and back which was nice and quick but hardly as plesant as the forest in the snow would of been.

GRAMP's event on Sunday was cancelled. A picture on the front page of their website gives us a good idea of the reason
