Sounds great, well cool..
I'm sure daddy wouldn't mind donating a few quid.
I love the traininng diary idea, will give the juniors their training quality and quantity to compare between themselfs, and hopefully encourage others to do more. Also would be good if you could get some top elites posting there weekly training so to give something for everyone to aim for and for people that don't know much about orienteering to see how hardcore we really are.

must agree with the training diary idea. i think it'd be interesting to see how much some of these rude boys really do, it may make me get some motivation for some much needed training. would also be a good source of alternative training sessions.
i found out when i organised our uni xc relays this year that it's quite easy to get free stuff if you root around. we didn't pay for a single prize, yet gave away nearly £500 worth of stuff, including bottles of aftershock, and loads of running kit. admittedly the kit we only got for free cos it was last year's stock, but i'm sure there must be some clothing company out there who have some kit they wouldn't mind donating if a decent plea was made.

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

by the way, news just in, at Deffer Woods today a shock occured when Oli Johnson, Rob Baker, Chris Mitchell, Andy Preston and Richard Guillaum all absolutely cuffed Ben Roberts.

So are the training diaries public or personal? I wouldn't be impressed with juniors being able to compare training diaries on line - far to easy for them to get into mileage competitions and over train when it's not right. Otherwise the plan looks pretty sorted to me!
Will? We've got proper fire now!

The diaries are by default public, but you can make sessions private if you like.
(Certain pastimes being comparable to a 10 mile run, but you might not want people to know the details of it. cough moray 2003)

I'm very impressed with "THE PLAN", though it looks pretty ambitious and you need to be careful not to overstretch your resources - core items done well will serve you better than trying to do everything you can think of and not having time to do it properly.
I can understand the idea of requiring people to log in before viewing the gallery to keep your bandwidth consumption down, though I think it will be more effective at getting people to register as members than to stop them downloading the pictures! Perhaps you could impose a maximum file size on images, to keep both bandwidth and download times down?
The training diaries sound like fun, though my meagre efforts might not take up much space... it would certainly be interesting to see just how much hard work the elite guys have to put in. And when you add a new editorial rant to the Features section, make sure you trail it on the forums so we know about it (and can reply).
I agree entirely about standard O-kit being a bit naff - I've started wearing wicking base layer type tops at events instead, and I'd certainly like to see this sort of material applied to orienteering. I look forward to seeing the results.
I'm happy to help with the coding work if there's anything that doesn't need a CompSci degree - does it split up nicely into manageable independent chunks? And I'll try to remember to write some more event reports and take some photos, if you really are interested in little local events in the flatlands...

It would be nice for news items to show whether they are new since your last visit and have been read or not. Also, some sort of indication when new pictures have been posted to the gallery would be nice (even if its just a forum or news post).

Can I just add that to repeat this trick on M would be completel unfunny...do it to someone who hasn't read Nopesport for crying out loud! (And ensure they recycle the mountains of waste paper afterwards!)

thanx so much for all the responses so far. when the dissertation is handed in a week on friday, full time nope employmeny begins in earnest (until i need to get a job in a while). i shall reply to all the points then.
a few brief things though -
i didnt put a timeframe on the plan. there isnt one. so overstretching ourselves wont hopefully happen. some of this stuff might take a year to happen.
becks - your in the wrong topic. doh.
peter g, i might have known you would be the one to chip in unceremoniously with WHAT YOU WANT. i asked for a response. not more to be added right now.

Perhaps I should have sent that privately to Ali rather than posted it here. I am very impressed with the plan but didn't really feel that I had anything much to add to what everyone else had already said. However, the plan seemed to indicate that a fairly big overhall of the site was in progress behind the scenes. I apologise for thinking technically rather than otherwise when responding.

Welcome to the world of IT - feature creep is the technical term for this...

OK I've read it now so thought I'd be more constructive. Looks like a reasonable target although abitious. I never used to be called FatBoy until I started doing projects like this so keep the training up and the coding down.
Echo thoughts on the training diary. I know when I was 14/15 there was massive competition for who's done the most miles that week. At ahem a few more years older than that I'm quite happy in the knowledge that I beat people who train more than me
I also echo thoughts on images - having to register to get images will only disuade a few, and do you want to be using registration as a disuasion tool? Surely the ultimate goal is to have all orienteers in the world using the forum?! I'd look in to other options such as hosting the photos elsewhere or put them under their own bandwidth limit e.g. 40% of total bandwidth to stop them drowning the rest of the site.
Looks like you're using PHP which I don't know much but you can stick me on the list of possible code monkeys if you like.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I had a thought about the training diaries - for an extra fee, might it be possible to have access to a qualified orienteering coach?
I know Samsonite didn't want a wish list, but it could provide some kind of cash for Nopesport and help the success of some orienteers who don't have access to coaches, either because they aren't in the GB squad, or because their entire region has no coaches who are qualified above level 2.

Maybe...
