I've been asked by one of my teachers to do an assembly on orienteering! I quote: 'You know none of us actually know what it is you're doing every weekend'!
I've just got about ten minutes. By the end everyone ideally needs to know that it's NOT just hiking and it IS a race, etc...It's a great opportunity to (a) actually explain what orienteering is all about, and (b) to promote the sport. It can include a big slide-show with photos etc. but I whatever I do I want to make it as interesting/amusing as possible.
Any ideas would be welcomed!!
help - orienteering assembly!

if you want them to see what elite competition/standard is like then I'd go for one of Thierry's follow me videos, other than that wouldn't know where to start...

Think i'd be tempted to nick one of thierry's vids, they are a fabulous explanation and definitely make it out to be a race not hiking
I remember being utterly stumped when I had to do it as a presentation in GCSE english but I think if you get some good pictures/clips then it's really easy to talk about. especially someone who has as much passion about it as you

just come out of the assembly - it went really well! I feel as if I've enlightened a couple of hundred people regarding what orienteering actually is, as opposed to what the Scouts seem to think it is!
My friends told me that the Year 7s were whispering to each other in amazement and everyone was enthralled!
I used some hard-core action photos and also photos of really lovely terrain, as well as a few maps. And or course the obligatory moose.
Already someone has come up to me to say that they never realised you had to run! With any luck they will be able to correct other misinformed people and soon orienteering will take over the world.....
Thank you!
