pasta and cheese wrote:Cruising through the junior forums i found your post about medical schools. I'm a 4th year at Leicester and here is my advice:
1st DONT GO TO OXFORD OR CAMBRIDGE
The course is jobby - very academic not practical. Oxbridge are renound for thier useless clinical skills.
Work too hard especially with the short terms. Learn lots of useless jobby especially anatomy.
On the plus side thier is the whole oxford cambridge thing but it will only impress the non medics. UOC's there as well, active.
2nd EDINBURGH IS OKAY
PLace is cool but course is still the old academic less intergrated one. Work hard as well and is expensive VERY. But i do re iterate it is cool. And OUC. V COOL. Oh and its goo if you want to work in scotland later.
3rd LEICESTER
Course is well easy. Nice laid back not too hard and the poeple are often less snobby here (apartantly they can be at other unis). Best course in the country for doctors and its the easiest as they focus on clinical skills and communication. Easy when you have the knack.
This is also cheap option - £40-50 per week in the good area.
Bad points no OUC but i have a car and will be here for 3 more years, 2 as HO and will go. Good summer league. Good place in country as can reach most races on the day, Only scotland and lakes a problem.
The city isn't as cool as newcastle or edinburgh though.
4th Nottingham
Course okay, not as good as leiceter or newcastle but better then most. Hard to get in aparantly. City medium cool. OUC Yes small and don't know about itrs future as most will be leaving soon Liz Day, Any Powell, Tim Bean and Ian. These guys run the whole thing. Good central location again. Campus living, not as good if you ask me but that's my opinion. Best check it out for yourself. Prices okaysih
5th NEWCASTLE
Fun place. OUC Yes but bad loaction and local areas suck really. Cool course which is simulra to leicesters. Vicky Broklebank goes there and does medicine ask her if you can. Prices okay.
6th SHEFFIELD
OUC the best (sorry EUOC poeple, face the facts!), location okay bit far from some but has very active in terms of oing so this will be fine. Good socail from oing i hear. Ask the shuoc lot but don't listen to the "you must come hear" ask them why and listen. Course not bad simular to Notts. Prices okay.
Don;t really know too much aboiut anywhere else but if you want info i can find it.

although I have to add:
where are these facts? BUSA - Edinburgh. FCC Uni's trophy? - went to Edinburgh, FCC last year? - every title is in Edinburgh. I could go on for a while but won't. It's a young club here and its only going to get better. And most importantly the craic is great.
