i think the selection are pretty fair with the small exception on julia although being a scot myself i do not understand wot you are all on about with the whole money thing!we still have to pay the £50 or whatever it is to go on a start squad weekend, so i don't see how it can be cheeper 4 us scots and the welsh!!where does this supposed extra funding come from,to make it cheeper!!

How I understand it is that you Scots have to pay for the Start weekends, because you don't receive the Sport England funding which backs the Start Programme. But all the English people get it paid for, therefore it comes out of the funding and there is a limit on numbers. So it doesn't cost the programme anything, but costs the athletes themselves more cos they have to pay for what the english get 'free'.

numbers have deffinitely gone down maybe because of shortage of funding. But on the whole with a few exceptions, they look reasonable with the top few getting selected. Maybe because so many juniors are relatively equal they couldnt select some and not others? Welsh and scots do have to pay for the tours and start weekends but i wouldn't have thought that this is the reason why they get selected, at least i hope it isnt. And also i thought Sport England had stopped funding orienteering...? or is this something my brain has made up?

Well done to everyone who got in.
The selections look fair to me too, maybe with the odd exception and I would think that the selections have nothing to do with nationality or whats cheapest to accomadate but that they are based on performance and attitude and I think has happened.
For them not to select someone they must have had a reason and noone here is in a position to speculate on what that reason is.

Well said Kris.
I'd like to make it clear that I wasn't implying for a moment that I thought that anyone there had been selected because of financial reasons because I stress that everybody there has worked hard to earn their place. I was just explaining the reasoning behind the rumours that have been going around for years, certainly as long as I've been involved in tours and selections.
edit: I don't think I ever actually said well done to everyone who was selected!

nooo, i just deleted that whole post....
well done to everyone.
I think the selections are fair although there are one or two cases where i was suprised. I think the numbers may have been cut slightly as there is less funding available to BOF and hence the start and junior squads.
Jene i think you only just missed out on the development squad, you're too old for start, but you're plenty good enough to get on to the jumior development, so i can;'t work it out. The selectors can't really say that you're not in it because you haven't got the potential to be good, (which is C***) because you do. If you've looked at how you've improved over the past year/18months, and you continue to improve i think you'll get in next year. (i think maybe the funding is the main factor here)
I can't work out why Julia wasn't selected, i just assumed that she had made herself unavailable for selection or had a really bad tour, which from what Stef said isn't true. As long as she doesn't get herself down over it, keeps training, and then goes out and beats the people who did make it, the selectors can't not take her next year.
I think this year, due to funding possibly, the selectors are having to choose the start squads members well. Choosing the people with the most 'potential' (people who are good at the moment). In the past they have 'gambled' by taking people onto the start programme who just scraped getting onto tour, but to the selectors they may have potential to succeed if they are given the right training.
well done to everyone.

Barriers are there to be overcome and for us to rise above them.

i think they just dont love me.. no, im not really questioning my non-selection, it was explained to me why not and also what i need to work on for next year and that sfair enough.. it is due to funding, if it was a squad of 15 not 12 maybe i'd be on it..
my posts were directed at start rather than development.. and wernt really meant to comment abotu selections themselves as i really dont have a clue.. had a brief mosey at results.. and was suprised at julia / jenny evans.. but still, apart from that i dont know who was good / deserved to go or whatever..
im just moaning cos i dont like how elitist they are..and think that the number of people they give that extra support to is too small.. and has been for however many years..

I'd agree with you totally Jene about what you were saying earlier, having more Lakeside type weekends which will reach a greater number of people. The wider the base, the better, and theres a greater the opportunity for the majority of juniors out there. But its not that simple. I beleive that Sport England in fact want BOF to select an even smaller group, just 5 or so juniors who show exceptional talent and are prospective medal winners in future. BOF stretch this a lot by providing tours which are a fantastic means of development. I dont think it would be possible to do away with the Start squad system altogether because they would then lose all funding and also lose the structure of the sport. However things like the nope training week are ever so valuable, its been talked about before on here a couple of years back but tours for juniors who havn't been selected for the BOF ones etc...the problem was at the end of the day there wasn't actually that much interest.

Ultimately thats completely untrue...its called free speech, and this is Nopesport, we're meant to express our views. I was merely a bit concerned that some of the best juniors are missing out on training to make them even better, and maybe one day challenge for a medal at WOC. You have to start somewhere...and I suppose its all in the name.

they havent selected julia because of personal reasons against her and not anything to do with her orienteering. she did not ask not to be selected (jus thought would clear that up!) she jus hasnt been because what we think is that some coaches dont like her personality.ah well there loss anyway shes not exactly missing out on much by not being on start all u get is two weekends of training so she aint missing out on much.
jene i think you should def be on the development squad, jus keep doing how well you are doing now and they'll soon realise it!!

Jenny is still a 1st year 14 so was not eligible for selection.
People on here are in a position to speculate, but there needs to be a definite difference between speculation and fact.
Stef - It seems to me (though I may be wrong) that what you are saying is only speculation. Why not ask the selectors what their reasons were?
