http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/asp/news.asp?news=O
and even though we all moaned last year about people not being called about non-selection..im now not as sure.. as once called, every texted everyone saying they hadnt got on.. so you spent the evening waiting for a call!! was made worse by the fact that the calls were made in alphabetical order!!! so once someone had been called after you you knew whether you'd got on or not!!

Big shock when Julia got a phone call last night, as anyone who knows my dad will understand how angry he is, britains only world schools winner this year jk and british champion last year, winning the white rose so soon after glenmore beating two people that have selected and in the JHIs what are people thinking!if anyone knows how much my sister trains then u will be just as shocked as we are. anyway this comment isnt just from me its from the whole family...leaving her out of selection my mum feels it is something PERSONAL against julia and not against her orienteering ability.if it isnt something personal and is against her orienteering ability, well her tour report seemed pretty good didnt outline anything horrific and didnt say she hadnt performed well so whats going on and its not as if anyone has ever had a bad time in one point in their orienteering career, maybe julia didnt perform as well as a few of the others did but she performs just as well as most of the people on that list. julia has as much right on that list as every single on of the other girls on there.anyway like i said earlier this isnt just a comment from me its from my mum too, sure my dad will have his own comments to make.this is just another case that backs up the reaons for me getting as far away as possible from this sport. these girls should be picked for their ongoing potential and their potential should be recognised and not on how they perform in one week out of a whole year of racing.many of u may now say oh but she can carry on with her training and prove the selectors wrong, well thats not the point, how do u think julias going feel when she comes home from school and see people she is jus as good as at orienteering have been selected and she hasnt.get a grip of yourselves and open your eyes.

suprised at that as well!! i just presumed julia for some reason had asked not to be considered for selection.. dont know why! Seems to be less people in general in the squad this year but Julia had a very strong season to begin with.. uh?!
i've had the "prove the selectors wrong" line as well.. why should she (julia) miss out on training when she's worked hard all year to keep her place on a squad? for regions without regular squad weekends surely this training would be invaluble.. as i know many juniors who havent managed to get a tour / START think lakeside is.. grrhhhh. I found it frustrating because i badly wanted to improve and found uppsala gave me a chance to improve so so much and had hoped that i'd be given that chance to again this year.. but keeping numbers small meant i had to find my own training.. though in hindsight the nope week was easily as good as a BOF tour, shame it was only a week.. but i think i'd even pick that over a BOF tour.
maybe selections should be done as first past the post? like points scoring at the lakes.. give points for all events.. at least people would then how likely it is that they'd get in.
I thought i still had a chance to get in but again looks like im borderline how they can select me for both eyoc and jec (even if it as reserve) and then not put me on the squad seems a teensy bit silly.. maybe i've not done quite as well as those on the squad, but i've got championship standard this year (everyone else who got championship is on a squad - bar stef, but thats her own choice) and gold or champ in every race i've run.. i'd like to be given the chance to improve but it seems like BOF only want athletes who are already running well
I wasnt that keen on start to begin with..but now the number of people on it has been reduced i think its even less sensible.. everyone who has got on deserves a place i think looking at the names.. but theres also quite a few who have performed just as well this year.. is some age groups there seems to be about 8 or 9 juniors all of a similar ability.. yet only 4/5 get put on start.. i thought the whole idea of start was to help "stars of the future" or whatever it was.. why narrow is down so much this early on?!
especially early on actually.. its easier to learn when your younger as well isnt it? and once your older there seems to be less chance to do any training at all.. 2 BOF coaching days..is that it? why not ditch START if funding is so tight and have more lakeside weekends?? then start selections for squads once you reach 18 and its a bit clearer as to who could do well...
the only reason i've been able to improve is through wales having such good/ dedicated coaches.. why cant bof include alot more people..and make everyone pay.. rather than not including those that could be good when they're older if only they were given a chance -
(sorry thats ended up so long)

second edit..
there seem to be alot more scots and welsh on the squad..
how can none of the four w14's on the english jhi team be on start?? start is actually just the scottish 14's
actually.. looking at the squad, there seem to be alot more welsh / scots than in pervious years..
is this because the welsh have monthly trainings and the scots have scotjos trainings.. whereas the english dont..
does this show we need more training as regional squads rather than "START" which seems to be..um, two weekends.. and thats it.. bit rubbish really. Maybe if start wasnt such a big thing then regions would actually put on training of their own.. and ALL the juniors would benifit..
**confused rant*

not sure if this is still the case but don't scots (and maybe welsh?) have to pay to attend Start squad weekends whereas the english don't (due to the way its funded by Sport England?). Hence funding cuts -> reduced squad size -> leave scots in as they don't cost anything effectively? I really hope this isn't the case!

It all seems a little but dodgy to me. The junior squad selections seem fair, and I think you were just unlucky Jene, someone had to miss out.
The start squad selections all seem a little bizarre. Well I say all...the non selection of Julia Blomquist is very odd to me. I don't know her personally, but she has been winning a lot of races, and is on the England team regularly. Perhaps Brooner is right, the Scots and Welsh are being preferred simply because they dont cost anything. Thats not a slight on the Scots and Welshies, its just that there are English people just as capable, so why?

thats what i thought as it is the case.. at least with wales..but didnt want to say anything incase i wasnt right.. would they actually do that though??
and rob.. yes, i know somesquads to have training.. are they the juniors who are selected?? my point was simply that there are more non english that normal.. and that it could either be the money issue or training. Having alot more training has definetly helped the welsh squad hugely, with our posistions in jircs getting higher every year and gaps closing between the english / scots and us in jhi's..
rob, you said yourself you couldnt believe it when you got your letter... is that because you got the training?! which proves my point a bit
bedders.. yep, they def are fair, i think.. i was just a little disappointed thats all.. maybe next year, my post was all about the start lot really

No, there are a lot of very good guys in our year and I knew it was going to be close. And with what I heard of funding being lower than usual this year I thought they may have been taking less people which decreased my chances. As it is they took as many as in previous years.

ok..i lied.. ignoring the 18's as they've confused me..
but starts decreased from 38 to 30... and the welsh/scot proportion has decreased from 8 to 7..
its just bacause the 14/16 girls is very scottish/welsh that i jumped to conclusions
so its not really changed that much.. i just think some people are pretty good and deserved a place.. actually..about 8 people

Looking at the selections, to me they seem fair (with the exception of Julia being missed off). There are quite a high proportion of Scots and Welsh but these people are towards the top of their age groups and so their nationality is regardless, they still absolutely deserve their place in the squad. There has always been a rumour that the Scots (and Welsh?) have separate funding so it is 'easier' for them to get on...but I think its more likely that they just don't count towards the squad roll in terms of funding and so don't count towards the maximum number of people from England that they can select.

just to clarify.. i do think the selections were fair (i think i said that) it just seemed a good time to point out that i think start is rubbish and money would be better spent subsidising funding for alot more juniors.. i.e top 50% or something.. like lakeside sort of numbers..

i'd agree...or just have a clear cut line, say everyone who gets championships standard that year or something, to give people a set target to aim for. Maybe I'm bitter cos I've never quite been good enough to get on start, but I think at this age (definitely 16s and below) there should be as wide a base as possible being supported because juniors who are good at the age of 13 when they enter the START Programme don't always come through to be the best orienteers by JWOC age and in the seniors, and likewise other people come through later on, (like Jene, who's first tour was Uppsala for example) and carry on developing into the seniors.
Having said that, the selection policy and structure of squads and tours etc is never going to be perfect and theres always going to be someone who just misses out. The main thing is to have a clearer standard to aim for, whether its top x in each age group or a standard like championship.
