Sundays race
I would just like to say that the person who told Julia Blomquist that she did "rubbish" on sunday shouldnt make comments unless they know the truth. Julia has been off school for two weeks with a UTI which started spreading to her kidneys. For her to finish in 5th place after being bed bound for 2 weeks is pretty good. I'm really angry that anyone could think that they had the right to go up to Julia and say she did rubbish anyway even if they didnt know that she was ill. Obviously this person doesnt know anything about sportsmanship and I think SHE should apologise to Julia next time she sees her.

thats out of order. You can never tell someone theyve done rubbish, or laugh at someones performance. They've tried their hardest to do that well, and even if its not their best ever performance, it doesn't mean you can knock it. A young m18 took the mickey out of me last year because his injured brother had beaten me. I didnt have the greatest of runs, but that doesn't mean i didn't try my hardest, and i was hurt by these comments. Its similar to some of the less constructive comments on tour reports, and louie walsh. You just cant criticise someones performance, if they want to say they were rubbish thats fine, but you cant criticise them, particularly if like in julias case, you are not aware of the circumstances. I'm sure julia tried her hardest, and well done to her for doing so.

Im sorry, you're stories of harshness are harsh, but the person who was on the receiving end of the most harshness at the weekend was Rachel Findlay Robinson. A short way into her course at the Britich Nights her light failed, so she asked someone to shine their light onto her map so she could see the way back, but he just said "no, you're not allowed" leaving her to wander back an hour later, freezing cold, and believe me it was very cold. Whoever that was, is the meanest person ever, and deserves a good telling off.

i heard about that too, and its just plain out of order. if someone's light goes, it's not their fault, they just need to get back to the assembly area. its completely irresponsible to deny someone a quick shine of your torch in that situation, and the person in question should be ashamed of themselves.
the same thing happened to both myself and lizzie white at the peter palmers in 2004. luckily it was in sutton park which is pretty well lit, and she had a spare maglite which we could see the map with , even if not the ground. we made a couple of mistakes but at least completed the course.
lesson learnt from this : headtorches fail. always carry a spare torch. even if it's the tinyist of maglites, its better than nothing.

That's well harsh, all of it!
1. Get well soon Julia. (and helen how are your feet now? can ye walk yet?)
2. If you find the beast of a person who denied rachel a light they deserve a big wet fish to the face. And yes, lesson for night events, spares are a good idea... never bother myself but may do in the future now i've heard that!

ditto to everyone's comments really...
hopefully whoever it was reads nopesport and now feels silly.. most people know julia's a pretty good orienteer anyway... so if she's that far down on the winner there has to have been something up...
and yeah.. poor rach, was a new torch as well, and from what i heard the person she asked wasnt even running at the time

I don't really want to get involved but I reckon that sort of stuff is probably not best on a forum but sorted individually. Its really not great to post threats however joking they are. I'm not surprised they havent said anything now. Don't get the juniors on nope against one person, it may not have been a nice thing to say - but i'm sure we've all said things we regret afterwards.
