jus cos the adult discusion is full of all the same crap......and cos this'll be ignored in there
but.....even if the 'perfect' arrangment was reached....age claases / JMW or both, what ever you think would work the best.....would you then suddenly be bothered about whether you got gold standard or not,
i mean how many ppl would really use it?? if it was readily availiable....
i dont think i would, i think this onlyserves as an incentive for the very young orineteers, e.g under 10's like that 9 year old from in the discussion bit
dont alot of ppl only look at the times cos the qualifying thing for tours like lagganlia is gold standard

I actually do use the standards, mostly Championship really at National events because I'm usually about 1 min either side of it. A Championship is a very reasonable aim for me given my standard. But at a badge event, if I don't get gold then I'll be disappointed, but that rarely happens, because of the much lower turnout to most regional events.
Obviously how I did personally is much more important to me. If something went wrong in my run then naturally I'll be annoyed with myself. But at the end of the day, in a selection race, the selectors will have a look at your result and they won't know the details and circumstances of your run. It depends on your time, on the day, against the other people there. In some cases though, I think they do look at standards.

I also find that gold/championship standards are useful to gauge how far I am behind the winner rather than places, depending on the event 6th can be championship or bronze standard and it makes a good gauge of how you've done overall esp if you're either new or just moved up a group and are not quite sure of who is of a similar standard for comparison of results.

yeah, i agree with clare, it makes me look at the percentage I was behind the winner, I work out the percentage so on a long course i dont just think, oh, I was 10 mins down, thats not good, when the winner did say 50mins and i did 60. I'll look and think, well I was well within Championship/Gold, so thats not too bad. Obviously I'll still look at the quality of my run though above anything else, but I do find standards useful.
