apparently so.
we got an email from someone when we posted the original story, saying that we had posted the english team, and scotland were also taking a team. however, the bsoa site just says british team (although i havent looked at it recently, it may have changed)
does anyone know anything about this?

They are taking a team of about 5 guys from
a random school somewhere who have never
orienteered before.
The guy who is organising it asked Maureen if
anyone in the Scottish Junior Squad wanted to go
but she never told anyone in the Squad which is
why the team is made up of five random guys and
not of anyone who can actually orienteer.

i think the team is supposed to be gb but they select it from the british schools champs, which is almost always in england and not really worth any scottish people going to. so it always ends up with just english people in the team. ops sorry lobban for not being u18...
it's all fun

but lots of scottish people say that they can't be selected not that they choose not to. i don't know whether it's because their school years work differently or not but i'm sure they'd be able to work out their school year in terms of the englih schools

There are some rules about entering teams into the world schools. You must have a school team for an age group (5 members from one school) before you can enter a select team. The English selection therefore has four school teams - 3 from Ulverston! - which allows entry of the select teams. So, ScotJOS cannot enter a Scottish team without finding a school with enough orienteers to make up a school team for the same age group.
Also, ScotJOS coaches are already committed to nearly 50 days away with the squad in 2004, between training, competitions and the summer tour. And, unfortunately, there is no money available for the trip so the full cost would need to come from the athletes.
Fair point about the British/English thing though - there should be more efforts to get Scots to BSOC. I don't know if they would be eligible for selection though?

Veteran I am... was at world schools in portugal, barrel of laughs.
Its all about funding... if they are called GB they cant get the funding they do when they call themselves England. We wore t-shirts and O kit with British written on it, but were down on the results as England. Sneaky.
