If you are more interested in GPS you might be better off going for a Garmin which will do HR as well. Mats Troeng's Quickroute software is probably the best orienteering specific GPS software going around and has been designed to work with the Garmins. The new version of the software has a bit more functionality to work with other GPS devices but it still works best with the Garmins.
What you will get in the Polar however is better HR information including RR intervals which when measured at rest can give you a great indication of your recovery status and fatigue levels. Polar's have a great reputation for quality and reliability but more recently they don't seem to have been quite so good...
Be worth checking out the Suunto HRMs as well which can measure EPOC which gives you an indicator of the physiological cost of each training session and also can do RR intervals to measure fatigue levels. They also have nice add-on units for GPS, cycling, foot-pod for stride frequency etc.
For information on EPOC here is an article http://www.fitsense.com.au/downloads/EPOC%20article.pdf

Re: polar 800g3
I use my Garmin more for pacing, from my (limited) experience the Quickroute software is pretty gash at the moment - seems beta-tastic. or maybe the maps I have tried to use it with were total gash? I certainly am having trouble getting such beautiful lines as I see Mats uploading - ie lines that go through all the controls when I have punched EMIT at all the controls. I certainly have to tweak waaaay more than 3 points to get anything like where I have run.
Lauenstein showed me another version which looked really good where you can run animations against others who have run with a Garmin. Quickroute doesn't have that functionality yet. Need to get the link from him..
The HR functionality on Garmin seems pretty basic but does everything that I am interested in. But that's probably not much as I train much more on feelings than data.
