I only seem to notice people with the Silva headtorches. Does anyone have any recommendations or cautions about the Mila headtorches?
Seems the handiest package to buy...but it's a lot of money to spend on something I'm not sure of.

Mila headtorch
I want to walk up the side of the mountain, I want to walk down the other side of the mountain. I want to swim in the river, lie in the sun. I want to try being nice to everyone.

Rosalind, I have found the Mila fine. It's comfortable, seems to be reliable, and as you say, reasonably affordable. I haven't used any other set, though, apart from the Petzl zoom, which I wouldn't recommend for orienteering.
My only minor niggle is that you have to double-check that you have the connectors fully in when you charge the battery - push them in with the end of a matchstick to make sure, as you really don't want your battery to die when you're still in the forest. The battery should be quite warm after charging (allow 16 hrs). If it ain't warm, it ain't charged.

Incidentally - anyone know what are the torches featured on the Jukola calendar? http://www.orienteeringtoday.com/stuff/calendar_preview.pdf (see August)

My MILA is great! lasted me for night-oing for the last couple of years - although i have noticed the battery life has been shortened a little bit to around 1h30...but then i only charge it for a max of 10hrs...

I've used a Mila for approx. 10 yrs bought it in Norway and used it 4-5 times a week. Fantastic, never had a problem and bought a second one last winter as my eldest son wanted to start night O'ing.

Glad that mine has been ordered and is currently making its way through the postal network as we speak (I hope). Yey.
