Any one read this part of the nopesport site?
If so, can you recommend the best head torch out there at the moment; think I'm finally going to give in and have a bash this winter.
By the way my virus software blocked the brightbikelights website advertising on the right saying there was an active virus...

Obviously the answer to your first question is "not many".

This all depends on what you mean by 'best'. There are many different head torches out there bidding for your £'s. And light output and price aren't necessarily related, but you can usually expect better build quality for your extra £'s.
At the bottom of the price range are kits like this this. Cheap and cheerful. Recently bought this kit for my lad's mountain bike to give him a good amount of light for not many £'s. Kit is very basic - comes in brown box with no instructions and a US charger, although adaptor to UK 3-pin included. Would do if you were tempted to 'give it a go' to see whether you like it. The same kit can also be bought from UK traders at twice the price, but kit is just the same.
Better 'Chinese' kit is available from companies like Magicshine and better batteries are available with some of the kits, but upto around £100, most high light output kit is all from China. Don't believe the quoted lumen values for any of these kits.
To get better build quality, non-Chinese, kit you'll need to be paying £150+. If you want British-made kit, try this. I'm currently using a 3-year old light set from Australia and I'm currently considering updating to the latest spec lights. Early this year, I managed to go into ice-cold marsh up to my chest (I wear the battery on my waist) and, at the same time, the light was knocked off by a low branch, resulting in the total kit being under water. Kit survived and kept and keeps on working (one of the claims of the company confirmed); not something I'd expect from any of the 'Chinese' kit.

I use the Silva Alpha, but it's now discontinued. I think the replacement is the Silva Sprint. Certainly not cheap (~250 with the high capacity battery?), but it's good quality, and powerful.

FWIW, my missus and I both use the Silva X-Trail Plus, which is light to carry and gives a good, variable strength beam. Doesn't stop either of us getting lost though . Were £120ish a year or so ago when bought. We have both used the headtorches extensively at our local Kent Night Cup events since purchased.

Re: Head torch wanted / recommendations requested
Having bought the light (and the BrightBikeLight headlamp that just arrived is a lot brighter than my old but defunct light), what is best way to link the cable fromthe lamp on the front of the head to the battery in the waist belt? My last one was all on the headband, and my old Silva lamp had a backpack battery holder. I have visions of getting hooked up on vegetation with this arrangement. So far have tried stuffing the cable inside a running top and the excess down my bottoms - not very flattering or comfortable.
