Recently I have just been wareing my standard O shoes for MM's eg VJ's or Silvas with the metal studs. The only time I would consider somthing else is if it's going to be very rocky and my feet or if I expected a lot of hard path running. They are definatly the best grip, it's a case of whether you can take the hard pounding for the amount of time involved.
I wore my VJ's for 8 hours last weekend and they were the wrong things but about half the rought was on road or stoney track. If I had had a look at the map better before starting I would of worn somthing else.

apparently gortex is ok unless its close to 100% humidity or that you are are running in stuff deeper than the boots. I guess If you running in a river it will be deeper than the boots so you will get wet feet

the salomon XA Harrier are ok, they are their equivalent of the walsh shoe.
XA pros are pretty good too, comfy even when worn for a long time. and good on lots of different underfoot conditions. goretex is not too hot for mountain running as you are bound to go in a bog and it then to be over your shoe, waterproof socks are good, you get a bit more height up the leg, but neoprenes are the best as they stay warm even with wet feet.

neoprene
I want neoprene, where can I get some ?
I bought (ok used up some vouchers on) some Seal skins socks.
These are crap
"Waterproof and breathable" MY ARSE !
about as waterproof as airtex, very breathable though I'll give them that.
if you want warm feet - do not waste your money.
they are a complete waste of vouchers.
