I'm looking to buy one for use at multiday events but there are so many avaliable, does anyone have any recommendations as what is good value/light/reliable? and is it cheaper to buy them abroad?

I would recommend an MSR dragonfly or whisperlite international. i've tested both of these and they are super lightweight, boil quickly and pack down really small. They will also burn on almost any fuel source. I can't help you with price but google them and see what you come up with, i'm sure they're not cheap but think they are the best around.
If its just a stove to throw into the back of the car then a good cheap one is the gelert bright spark, well cheap but works well.see it here

depends how well you want to do, you might want to cook a gastronomic delight rather than bonk out halfway round your course after a tin of beans.

I saw this great stove for boiling water last week being sported by some hc old guy - it was like a flask which you put twigs / paper in which had a double wall, inside the wall you put water. The water boils in like 3 mins! And all you need is twigs. Good for a quick brew but not so good for super noodles!

Pyrat is describing a Kelly Kettle - boils about 2 litres of water with very little fuel - waste cardboard food packaging works well.

If carrying liquid fuel stoves / bottles by air, the best strategy is to fill the burner (eg Trangia) / bottle with water, as this expels any fuel vapour. And carry alernative fuel nozzles if you stove has them eg most MSR stoves can burn paraffin (called kerosine in many languages), petrol (often called gasoline or gas), sealable gas cannisters etc. Paraffin is much safer to use than petrol - I'd only use petrol is there really was no alternative. Best to ask someone who knows the country and language well where to buy exactly what you need. Nearly ran into trouble finding fuel in Chile, until we realised benzina blanca was suitable (USA citizens call it white gas or Coleman fuel)- but it's not the same as white spirit, as we discovered in the Falklands.

I use a dirt cheap Colman outlander(about £12)(for hiking, not done any mutiday yet)- main problem with is that it does not have a spark thing, which means that you have a match or a lighter, but a part form that its great, if you want something serious my dad has a MSR omifuel (can take 7 types of fuel) which is very good but a little expensive.
