I looked into Digital Camera's 6 months ago, and after quite a lot of research went for an Olympus c765 UZ and am very happy with it. Price I paid 6 months ago was £218, but it's now less. 10x optical zoom, variety of basic settings (portrait, landscape, sport) then options for you to program. After a handful of wobbly shots, it's very easy to learn how to use.
If you want to see the image quality, there are some pics from my recent trip to Canada here

For example the moose was taken at 10x optical from a canoe. Not ideal for fine photography, but the results are quite decent.
As for buying advice, go to Jessops and price match. When I got the camera Jessops advertised it as already being £50 discounted to £275. I walked down the road to the library, found it for £218 on the net, walked back into Jessops and they price matched it to £218. Added bonus that you get a Jessops guarantee and can go to any Jessops to get it fixed. V. Good. (Yes I know that doesn't apply to you Ed, but for those in blighty it's worth a punt.) Feel free to email or PM me any questions.

I'm going to go ahead and reccommend the compact Pentax SVi again. The S series regularly score well in reviews and I was very happy with mine for the 2 years of fairly abusive use I got out of it.
Edit: It seems the S5n is the same as the S5i but with the added bonus of mpeg4 (tv quality) video recording.
