As my last post was so successful I thought I'd start another one.
Just got a bike and want to do MTBO and Polaris events etc. What do people think is the best map holder. Seen the Miry one on the peel web site - is it worth the money?

Wouldn't say its worth £35, but the all the others you can get are rubbish in comparison. All the MTBO guys who compete regularly and do well have the Miry board.
The Silva one isn't bad. I had to do quite a few modifications to stop it rattling and moving on the bars. The Silva one is nigh on impossible to fit on riser bars I found, so I bought the Miry. Much better overall.

Miry is great for shorter MBO events where the maps are relatively small and more navigation (relative to longer events) is needed. Anyone with a foot O background will want to keep the map orientated and Miry is great for that - don't try thumbing it all the time though.
For longer events like Polaris and some trailquests, maps can be as big as A2. Navigational decision are only every 15 minutes and most of the nav problems are to do with the accuracy of the map rather than lack of technique. The perspex clip type ( http://www.polaris-apparel.co.uk/) make it much quicker to take out the map, have a good close look, re-fold it, re-orientate it and clip it back in again. There are usually enough road sections to do all this without stopping and without falling off.
Option 3 is DIY. Go to any MBO event and there are loads of examples - good, bad and ugly.

I bought the silva one, simply because I couldnt find where to get the miry one at the time, it was OK, but it slips all over the place but then as phil already pointed, that was onto riser bars, if you dont have these i not sure how much better it is. it was however much better than my partners one which involved velcro and a plastic bag.
Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they are yours.

I still have a Silva one in its original packing (cos the Croeso MTBO was cancelled )
I'll let you know after the JK if it's any good (though on the basis of the reviews here, I might try and return it to Compasspoint)
