After sending this to Inov8 themselves as a bit of feedback, and receiving zero response, thought I'd post it here...
Dear Inov-8,
I've been a mudclaw user since they first came out, and I have tried all iterations, apart from the new yellow ones.
So I’ve had the heel problems of the original 330s, the dodgy sole problems of the grey and yellow 330s etc.
I love mudclaws. (I run on Ilkley moor all the time). I usually get around 700 miles from a pair.
Latest ones are the 265s – here’s my feedback.
It’s a bit love/hate.
Plusses:
Comfy
Secure
Lightweight.
Minuses:
Lack of grip.
Here’s what I think you did. I hope (cos the alternative is that it was a cynical ploy to make them wear out quicker)
You wanted to make them lighter. So you trimmed the weight in the midsole and uppers. But it wasn’t light enough.
So you cut down the amount of rubber in the sole. You did this by reducing the height of the studs.
New 265s have LESS stud than my 272s which have 300 miles on them.
This means they don’t grip as well.
I.e. you have removed the sole USP for mudclaws – by reducing the sole, you removed the soul. (see what I did there? J)
I hope you rectify this in the next generation of mudclaws.
Please please please bring back the aggressive Rottweiler style outsole, and do away with this poodle of a weight weenie sole.

Re: Inov-8 MudClaw 265
I would agree entirely. Comfy and light, but fresh out the box didn't offer the downhill grip I'm after. Was only going to use them on muddier/winter races/training as I use Xtalons for fell racing, but have been told the 300's grip is much better and the 'extra' weight doesn't have much affect - the 300s a great all round (fell) racer I've been told by someone who should know!

Glad it's not just me .
I was really disappointed with them. I guess they'll make a nice trail shoe once the minimal studs have worn down a bit.

I'm getting a little fed up with Inov. I love the old 315s and the Mudclaw 300 but the replacements don't last very long. So I'm trying out a cheaper... much cleaper alternative - More Miles Cheviot 2. You can get 2-3 pairs for the the price of new Inovs. Great grip and super comfortable!
