Any recommendations as to make/model and best on line source ??
Current (bust) one work by looking through rotating gubbins -
I notice many available have a pop-up mirror. Any experiece whether these are better / worse / more likely to be broken by mr clumsy ?

I have used both the Suunto KB-14 and the Silva Type 54.
The Suunto didn't like being dropped, despite being in an aluminium housing.
The Silva 54 is just like most other Silva compasses, just more expensive
at around £60, although I think Amazon may do them at £55.
It is not partial to being exposed to (very) low temperatures for extended
periods as it gets a bubble in it (but that may also be a function of age).
If using them for O Map surveying the mirrored compasses can be (for me) a bit
difficult to read an accurate bearing of. On the other hand I am aware of at least
one mapper who doesn't use a sighting compass to read bearings, just a normal
base plate unit .
