LED's are very expensive in terms of battery power though: On full power 3 AAA batteries will last about 80hrs.
I'm starting to fell as if I'm loosing this argument, but like i said, if anyones got an led light and and a normal bulb let us know the difference so we can sort this one out...

conclusion:
for night orienteering you need a 10/20w daddy, led or halogen doesnt really matter, iv seen some led headlamps with separate batteries.
but
for training, trail running at night a little tikka is ideal, 80 hours on 3 batteries is pretty good, thats a good 6 weeks training there and you have to remember a tikka is about an 1/8the price of a daddy.

seriously the battery weighs nothing, 2kilos max, and id say 2 kilos on your back is lighter than 200gramms on your head. believe me i was a petzl guy until the summer when i took the plunge with a silva 4-0-something nice.
but a simple petzl is nice for day2day training, no constant charging of batteries etc or faffing with a battery pack
you only really need to buy a super 20w headlamp if you're serious about night orienteering. i got through two years of running nighgt champs and nordic night relays etc. (spring cup, nrwegian night champs) just by asking round my club, loads of people (rich ones, with jobs) will gladly lend you a head torch for things like this.

no its not. all weight supported on you head is held still by your neck muscles. unless you're some sort of strong-man their usually not very big. whereas your back muscles are some of the strongest in your body.
compound this with the fact that your head moves around a lot more than your back, esp when running in forest, and your gonna end up with your neck screwed before your legs. which is wrong.[/quote]
