Gaiters?
The word conjurs up images of Dad's Army and does not appeal, but having got scratched to bits in a local event today despite wearing some fairly thick trousers, something has to change. Anyone have views on which work the best? I do not think they can look good (wearing socks on the outside of your trousers is not far away from doing the same with your underwear) but are any less unattractive than others?

i wear gaiters but i wear them underneath my o trousers. they still protect and i find it more comfortable than wearing them over the top coz i find that my legs get less sweaty. theyre more comfortable than bramble bashers. no you cant get good looking gaiters as far as im aware but you cant see them if you wear loose o trousers over the top.

Started using VJ Pro's which seem to be good, but I do get sweaty legs. Haven't thrashed them through a waist high brambles yet though.
At least they don't fall down like the bramble bashers used to when worn over the lycra tights.

I stopped wearing gaiters years ago even on the grottiest mc grotty areas purely cos despite being 6'2" all the cuts appear above the knee not on the shins.
My advice is just keep running and your legs will get used to get cut to shreds. Either that or move to Sweden and run in Bilberries the whole time which are much softer.

I have never tried bramble bashers, but as I started orienteering after years of hillwalking etc, I simply used normal nylon (not canvas) alpine (not yeti) gaiters, tied with a lace under the foot, worn over trousers, or bare legs if wearing shorts. They protect my shins well and prevent bits of bracken etc falling into my shoes.

Not an orienteering scar story.. a few years ago, I patched up a male friend's forehead after he'd fallen off his bike, and was very pleased with the result until he asked "will there be a scar?" I said probably not, and which he was very disappointed "because all the other lads in the water polo team had scars on their heads".
