When you get to my age you don't need gaiters cos your whole shin is one big scar. Hairy one at that.

Depends how deep the scar is. Last time I checked brambles don't cut to the bone...
I could show you loads of scars with hairs in but that would be a bit gay (not that there's anything wrong it's just not for me).

Yup I find one of those every time I have my hair cut - looks like I'm an extra from the Matrix...

ho ho, that happened nearly 15 yrs ago, that'll teach you for climbing on the furniture!
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

Well, I bought some VJ pros and wore them today and I was glad. The foresters had been busy in the woods (SO local at Stoughton) leaving all kinds of brashings all over the place, the nettles were supercharged, the brambles were high and there was a large area of yew with lots of pointy sticks at shin (and eye) level so the gaiters definitely saved me some grief. Below the knee, not a mark. Above the knees I have a lovely range of scratches, nettle rash and other injuries.
Unfortunately, new gaiters did not stop me making a classic 180 degree error and charging off confidently in exactly the wrong direction which sadly still looked plausible on the map - lost nearly 20 minutes by the time I realised what an idiot I was.
The fabulous views from a couple of points on the course made up for it though.

i must disagree with the argument that gaiters cannot look good....i mean i wore one bright pink gaiter and one balck one at the last day of croeso and it looked crazy...altho gaiters do not stop you making 180 degree errors...especially from the start when everyone can see you...even more so when you wear a fluorescent pink gaiter
