Why are we suddenly getting Google ads at the top and side of the page? Im finding it really irritating

I'm not seeing any, so it may be that you've unwittingly installed some sort of plug-in. Try running Spybot Search & Destroy and see what it comes up with.

I've now realised why I didn't see the Google ads - blocking software doing its job properly! If you don't want to see them either, try using Mozilla/Firefox with the Adblock extension and this comprehensive filter list.

Today for the first time Every time I log on to a thread the google ad pops up in the top middle of the page - making it difficult to get to the options like - reply - are you trying to shut me up or something?

They're a PITA in Konqueror, too. Personally, I'm not too bothered about the ads being there, I just don't like them obscuring part of the page.
However, I have found that the ads appear a fixed distance from the left-hand side of the page. If you make the browser window narrower, so that there's less of the grey border either side of the content, the ads will move out of the way.
But why they've been made to appear a fixed distance from the left, I don't know.

That's a very handy extension Mark, and will definitely be put to use! Yet another reason for people to ditch IE
