Hey all,
I'm planning a basic white-orange "elevator" course for Fresher beginners in Freshers Week but I also want an added element of some tougher "bonus" controls for the more confident to get. Any ideas how I can combine a normal course with bonuses to rank everyone on the same results? I thought time deducted for every bonus control but it'd have to be enough time to make up for going off the course to get it in the first place.
Any ideas?

Time bonus would work. Perhaps easier though is to make it effectively a score event. Say 10 pts for each of the white controls, 20 for yellow, 30 for orange and 50 up for the bonus ones. Maybe it's not a good thing, but that way you could get a result for those that don't find one or more on the fixed course.

On our NOC summer league events we got people to start with the orange course and that was followed by a score event.
There was a 60-min time limit, so if you didn't finish the orange within 60mins then you weren't allowed to head out on the score. The quicker you complete the orange, the more time you have to pick up bonus controls (each of which count for eg. 10 points, like in a normal score event).
The you rank people in order of a) points score b) time.

If you're really targetting novice freshers...
I'd suggest having a super-short white to get used to map and scale, give them a chance to talk to someone when they finish, then try a more ambitious orange.
